does advancing the timing affect the Vtek? if not, how do we get started?

how do we get started with what? I advanced my timing when i had an intake, exhaust, and header, and noticed minimal difference via butt dyno.

advance it to 17-18 degrees, it doesnt affect the vtec as the vtec engagement has nothing to do with engine timing, to bring the vtec in sooner you need to either get a chip which brings it in sooner or get a vtec controller

wow...ive honestly never seen "vtek".

ignition timing has nothing to do with the vtec engagement point (if thats what you speak of). if youre into manipulating the vtec point, search "vafc".

Yes, but I have the JDM version, that's why it's called Vtek. I added a couple mods to it, I replaced the grille that covers up the mic and speaker with lightweight JDM plastic.
