what year and model of car is it? What kind of mods do you have? When was the last time you replaced the spark plugs, wires, and perhaps the distributor cap and rotor?
pull the cap, make sure the rotor didn't fall off.
check the wires at night, make sure you don't have cross arcing
worst case, burned valves and blown head gaskets cause this condition as well
