Default VTEC engaging sparatically in/out?.... (VTEC stupid)

Any ideas?

Car is a 99 Civic SI... 89K on the motor. Took a buddy for a ride today and I noticed VTEC didnt come on till around 6750 instead of 5500 as usual and it would go in and out of VTEC...

Whats going on?

This is my first VTEC car, I've only had a B20 and LS-turbo before....

Please help! Thanks!

By any chance did you notice that this is the accord forum?

How do you know when the Vtec solenoid is turning on and off?

Here are Vtec basics for you.
You can see that RPM is only part of the picture;

This was originally in the Accord forum and was moved here.

Yes I too think you should first check your oil level as it is the cause for faulty VTEC and the subsequent check engine code P1257/8/9.

I was having the same problem, just change the oil and see if that helps.

Cool thanks guys, I'll check the oil today and add some if needed and take it for a drive and see if that helped out.
Sorry, I dunno how I accidently posted this in the Accord forum.

x3 on the oil change, make sure the levels are good and then fi its still doing it check your oil pan for damage sometimes a dent or damaged oilpan can cause what your talking about because the pickup is having to work harder to create that extra oil pressure.
anything electrical would usualy throw a code.
