How many teeth does a 4th/5th gen h22a cam gear have ?
I'm trying to figure out what effect misaligning the timing belt on a cam gear by one tooth has on ignition timing. ( 1 tooth = deg crank ?)
Put everything back together after doing a cam swap and found the igintion timing retarded 4 deg even when realigning the distributor with white out.

Why would your ignition be retarded by swapping just cams? Unless the marks were not aligned correctly when you put the timing belt back on or are the cam lobe centers different than the stock? Is the distributor groove cut differently? Did you get your head milled as well? Just curious.

A little background. I was swapping out the stock cams for some after market ones. I set the timing about a year ago with a timing light (15 deg) and marked the distributor with whiteout to make sure it didn't shift in timing.
The aftermarket intake cam snapped at the cam gear...(lucky no valve damage) so we reinstalled the stock cams.
Checked the ignition timing and found 10-11 deg. The distributor white out marks didn't move. BTW.. head wasn't milled.
I didn't think that timing belt stretch would retard the cams/ignition timing by that much (4 deg) !! I'll be rechecking the crank TDC mark with the cam gear marks to make sure everything lines up (therefore ruling out TB stretch)
Any thoughts ?
