Hi everyone, I have a 94 honda accord VTEC EX stickshift...my problem is that my VTEC is not engaging so my rpms only go up to 5500 .. I'm not sure what it could be so can someone please help me???

 

Hey it could be several problems, this happened to me a 2 years ago with mine. I went crazy, it can be your V-tec Solenoid, ECU or what happened to me is that i bent my oil pan from below and crushed the oil pick up line so there wasn't enough pressure to engage the v-tec!

Possible Causes:

Oil to thin Use 10w/30 Non Sinthetic
Oil Pan could be bent or damages
V-Tec Solenoid
ECU

is your check engine light on?

 

Unfortunately it is on but due to my speedo! I tried changing the sensor but did not work, now im going to buy another. If your car has no pressure it should turn the light on, did you have someone read the error codes?

 

no my check engine light is not on

 

alright hey, this is whats most likely happening...you you know the space between the air manifold and valve cover, there should be a green plug leading to the engine and above it should be the vtec cylinoid....that plug is a switch that tells vtec to activate at 4600rpms....if its not plugged in thats would cause it...mine was broke off and it should cost 50 to get a new one and its simple to change out...dont let the honda dealership do it for you though, also dont push your engine to much, my engine had a lot of stuff wrong that i was unaware of and those f22 only need a little bit of heat and bang...lots of problems, mines in the shop right now getting my pistons fixed, gasket changed, head cleaned and shaved......800$$ just to fix it up, i couldve bought an h22a1 that i coulda bolted right down for 1800$ dumb me

 

Are you 100% that it's not crossing over to VTEC?
Check your oil level/pressure. Remove the VTEC solenoid valve and check the filter screen for dirt/sludge.

What mods have you done to the car or is it stock?

FYI the F22B1 VTEC can engage any time after 2300 RPM if the conditions are right.

 

yeah i'm 100% sure its not engaging..it stops at 5200..i removed the top part of the solenoid about an hour ago and it seemed fine.. i haven't taken the whole part out yet. i checked the solenoid plug and its not broken or unplugged..my engine light is not on either..i have a CAI and a Greddy exhaust so technically its not stock.. man this is driving me nuts because i know i can get more power than what the car is giving me now.. people are telling me that i have a "non-vtec" ecu but i don't know if i should believe that..

 

was vtec engaging at one point in time while youve had your car? ... if it has obviously you know not to believe whoever is feeding you that information ... i dont know what your max rpm range is but vtec will not stop you from reaching your rpm redline ... if vtec is not present it will simply just not engage

 

that makes sense. lets just put it this way: my car acts like when you rev a VTEC engine while you are parked, the VTEC doesn't engage. I took off the VTEC solenoid today and cleaned it and made sure it was plugged in correctly. it still does it. the car has been like that ever since i bought it 2 years ago but i'm actually trying to fix it now. I'm starting to think that it is the ECU, but i'm still a bit skeptic about that idea...so today i ruled out the idea of the solenoid being messed up because my check engine light is not on, only when i turned on the car without the solenoid plugged in (i forgot )

 

Quick question, did you do an engine swap? And if so did you replace the ecu? If this is the case if your car is stick you have to make sure that the ecu that you have is for a Manual Trans and if Automatic the ECU must be for a automatic trans. Did you check your oil pan like i told you before?

 

i don't know if an engine swap was done to the car..i bought the car and not much has changed since the time i bought it. I just went outside and checked my oil pan and it looks fine, i didnt see any dents. i started looking around for an ECU. Do you recommend getting an ECU from EBAY? or a junk yard?

Check to see what ECU you have before you look at buying one. It's bolted to the firewall/floor under the carpet on the passengers side. Once you find out what ECU you have then you'll know if you need to swap it or not.

 

do i just copy down whatever code is on it and look it up?

 

Post what you see on here and I'm sure someone will oblige. Or you could just type "Honda ECU list" in Google and get a pretty good list of Honda ECU links.

Ok... i'm almost 99% sure that if your tach or speedo (vss) isnt working, vtec wont engage correctly, when I did my h22 swap I had some vss issues and my vtec wouldnt engage at all. Im pritty sure the ecu needs to vss/tach info inorder to allow vtec to engage. Just my .02...

 

I WAS ON THE SAME THING AS U N I FOUND OUT THE 3 PROBLEMS. N ITS ONLY 3-4 TO CHEK. IT COULD BE UR TIMING BELT IS OFF TIME ,NOT ENOGH OIL OR TOO MUCH OIL . N IT COULD B UR OIL PAN IF UR CAR IS SLAMED LIKE MINE. O N MAKE SHURE UR V TEC WIRING IS CORRECT .

 

like they say, it could be your vtec solenoid but can be many other things.

 

well my tach did stop working recently lol now i have to tap it so it can register the miles...i'm looking into the ECU to see if that fixes the problem..

Right on, Im tellin ya, if your tach/vss isnt working, neither will your vtec. The ECU requires the info from the VSS to let vtec know when to engague.
