1990 civic si question
hi, i'm new here and need a little assistance: could someone tell me how i can find out if air conditioning was a dealer installed option or a factory installed option on a 1990 civic si and how can i get the proper supporting documentation to prove it. i'll be racing the car in scca solo stock class and i can remove the a/c ONLY if it was a dealer installed option. thanks!!!
well, that about covers all the possibilities.
here is my contribution to the chaos.. i know that there were a few si's with factory power steering, and you couldn't have AC installed with PS, but the catch was: it was only for the automatic versions. you couldnt get a manual with PS, that i know of.
The question really is: does the SCCA distinguish between trim levels? or is it just platforms? because if it is a blanket statement regarding the 1990 civic, with no designation to package level, then it was an option for sure. But i guess that might also put a lancer in the same category as a lancer evolution.. so.. i don't know.
my opinion on the matter is: the 1990 Civic SI's AC was optional, because the auto trans was an option
I have been proven wrong before though.. so if any of you have an SI with PS and AC speak up..

well, my "si" is a standard, but, the scca does distinguish between trim levels. what i think i've pieced together thus far is that a/c was a dealer option for the si, because the complete a/c unit is listed as an available accessory in the honda dealers parts listing for that year/model. wouldn't that mean it was a dealer option along with the other accessories in that listing, like a roof rack, different wheels, etc...??
It won't make any difference for me saying so (to your SCCA rules people) but A/C was NOT a standard feature on the 1990 Si hatch as it rolled off the assembly line.
A/C was a dealer installed option.
I've got three different techs here at my shop that all worked at Honda dealerships back in 1990 and they all specifically recall that none of the Civic Si models came off the truck with a/c. They recalled installing the a/c systems on EVERY Civic there, incuding the STD models. Here in GA it was a big selling point. I remember my mom had to specifically ask for them to NOT put a/c on her 1990 STD because she was cheap.
If you're in a southern state then I'd say 90% of the ones you'll come across have the a/c in them since it's so hot down here.
My best advice is to try and find someone with a 1990 Civic sales brochure where it will specifically NOT list a/c as standard.
I'll see what I can hunt down.

b18c5-eh2 is correct. A/C was a port option - installed at the dealership.
I’ve been autocrossing with SCCA - in many different classes - since ’95. I know you won’t have any issues with removing your A/C! That being said you must remove ALL of the A/C as it’s all or nothing depending on the class you want to run.
If you were driving let’s say a ’01 Type R then there would be an issue with removing the A/C. A/C was standard on the ’00 and ’01 where it wasn’t on the ’97 and ’98.
If your region is anything like mine then there are knowledgeable people who will be willing to help you out.
