Default Transmission problem help

I had to tow my brothers car and now I have to figure out what is wrong...Its a 5 speed tranny. It doesn't engage and it makes random banging sounds even in neutral. Also when I was towing it, it smelled like burnt clutch.I'm about to drop the transmission but I was just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone or if anyone has a clue what went wrong???

did you tow the car forward or backwards. sounds like you messed up your clutch during the tow. its front wheel drive remember so tow it from the front with the front wheels off the ground. otherwise you will smell burnt rice crispis.

Towed it forwards tires on the ground I had no other way.So your saying if it wasn't messed up it probably is now.

So here is where I'm at. Started to set up to take out the transmission. I turned the car on to hear where the noise was coming from and I noticed that the pass side axle didn't move.It spins but only up to the cv boot that is closer to the wheel. I pulled it out and there is no noise coming out of the transmission anymore. So I don't know if I should drop the tranny and continue.Anyone???

Thanks for the reply that is kinda where I'm at. I kinda hoped the tranny would be alright, but I can't explain why the car would not run just because the pass side axle broke.anyone??

Awesome well after waiting for forever for a axle, It turns out that the only problem was the broken axle weird but better than the transmission being messed up
