I have read how to read a compressor map tons of times, but math and equations aren't really my thing. I'm looking for a journal bearing turbo, that will come on decently quick and won't die at red line, but I do not want a over sized turbo for my application. I'm looking at a pretty conservative 300-350whp max out of this setup for now. The engine will be bone stock, 3.0l straight 6 red line starting at 6k.

you have a 3 litre bimmer not to mention its the good 3-series model, in not an M3 exactly but still a good model.

why dont you just build the car N/A with a sweet set of ITB's ?

I would end up spending the same amount of money, or more to go N/A and have less power. I would much rather turbo.

S256. S258. Game over.

 

I would naturally push the S256/S258, but neither of those turbos are really necessary for your goal. You could get a simple 57 trim or 60-1 for your goals easily and still have room to grow...

Choosing the right turbo is the least of your worries...you should do some research and figure out how you are going to tune that thing. There isn't alot of support when it comes to fuel management or fuel/ignition controllers. Thats why I haven't turbocharged my E46 330i either.

I already have the tuning aspect taken care of. I already have done my research, I know what, how and who is going to tune the car, the style manifold im using, the intercooler setup im using, etc etc etc. The only aspects I do not have covered yet is the exhaust size and how Im going to run it, and the turbo.

A 57 trim would suffice? Being a 3.0l I should have decently quick spool and make 300whp pretty easy correct?

also you can use magesquirt, VEMS, Hydra, and theres a few other DIY ems out there that work fine for BMW's and MACA's

 

AEM EMS, custom jumper harness and I have talked to my local tuner (evans tuning) who will be tuning the car.

AA is very far of a drive, sadly there are not too many people who deal with BMW's in the northeast (none in my area that I am aware of).

57trim on my Honda makes 325, on a 3.0L BMW it will definitely make plenty of power.

Sorry to get a little off topic, I've tried to read about turbo bmws, and learned basically nothing except they cost $$$. I assumed that the ecu can be reflashed, like what those "tuner" things do for the gm cars, like a gto with the squires remote mount turbo kit, etc. Guess not?
What about the traction control, "stability control", whatever else that bmw has? Will the aem negate those functions? What about the awd system on the 330xi? (If the ecu controls that, then no aem for the xi model?)

actually megasquirt and VEMS control those things . i still dont know why many honda people knock the power of MS. for $400 full standalone with a **** load of options, it cant be beat.

oh yeah also GM's have a lot of options from using obd2 plug in tuners to using full standalone units. look at PARISH he made about 1100 WHEELhp in his LS1 powered twin turbo silvarado truck that thing was in the 10's high 9's street driven
