can a full 96-97 jdm type-r engine be reffed into a 98 gsr?
so im new to the whole honda scene and ive been looking at some cars. i found this 98 gsr with a full 1996-1997 jdm type-r engine swap (off of j spec auto) professionally installed. the post says the car is smogged and registered but not reffed. i was wondering if it can be reffed in the 98 chassis and if so, how i would go about doing it.
(im not sure how these forums work, it said something about a limit of 5 posts a day for new users, so if thats the case will someone email me about it?
yahtzee530@yahoo.com)
thanks in advance

From what I've seen and from expeprience, the JDM ECUs don't talk to the OBD port for emissions purposes, so if that car has a JDM ECU in it, when you take it in and they plug their computer into the OBD port, nothing will show up.
The JDM ECU doesnt "talk" to the OBD port because the JDM motors dont have the proper emissions systems required in the United States. Besides that, it is unlawful to swap a motor from a car older than yours. You would need a 98+ motor with full emissions systems for it to pass. The answer is no.
Bar referee has been cut out of the California budget for awhile, so even if it can be ref'ed, you won't be able until it comes back.
you should be able to use a p73-ao3 ecu from a usdm type r. normally they can be had for $150-200. i remember something about the crank sensor and dizzy being different as well. shouldn't matter since you can swap your GSR stuff right over. i'll tell you this much though. i considered the JDM R motor. they are overpriced for being a used motor. i built my 18c1 block for similar money, with better parts and now have a new motor, not a decade old motor from a warehouse.

Let me save you the time. No it can never be reffed.
Ever.
The BAR does not allow previous year engines to be in newer cars. Your Type R would have to be a 98 or newer.
What you DO have working for you is that, knock sensor aside, no one at a smog shop will ever know the difference as the stamping on the block is the ONLY thing different. Don't even worry about having it legalized and scratch out the part of the head that states it's a 97.
