Default YS1 Transmission

Hey guys, new to the forums on here but have been viewing them for a while.

I have an EF8, 1990 honda crx sir, with a stock b16a1 with ys1 transmission.

I have been told that its a "common" problem, for the transmission to grind when going into 3rd, this "common" problem has turned into a bigger problem, it grinds dangerously hard, not stopping me from driving, by now i've noticed that its beyond repair (syncros gone), i either rebuild the transmission or im going to drop an integra ls transmission in there, i've been quoted at 350 just for the tranny itself and am wondering if thats reasonable in the market today.

Just wondering if you have any feedback, i've heard of AC delco syncro repair mesh fluid etc to do a quick fix. If you guys have any ideas please let me know.

Thanks,

if your synchros are that toast then no amount of synchromesh is going to save them. if the 350 is the price for just the transmission, thats awfully high for an ls. if thats price to install the transmission, and you're providing one to them, then thats sounds like a pretty good deal. perhaps you're referring to the cost to have it fixed. If so, i would imagine for $350 you'd be better off just getting a whole nother transmission altogether. Since i'm going to assume your ys1 is just a standard ls transmission and not the usdm gsr ysi, or the XSi integra ys1 with the optional lsd.

if you do have an actual 90 sir, stock it does not have the ys1 tranny. only the 92-93 integra's had them

Both jdm and usdm Ys1 "vtec" tranny's are the same with the exception of the jdm have the rare option of lsd, maybe 1 out of 15.

That being said, you can get new syncros at any Acura dealer. Also, you can go with un upgraded set from a company called gearspeed

I have a Jdm Crx, imported not too long ago. My crx came with the stock b16a1, with YS1 Transmission w/ optional LSD, i have LSD. I don't have the tools to replace the syncros, and have been quoted at a local shop. the 350 was the price i was quoted at without installation, im wondering how much the ls teg transmission would be in the market today.

thanks

If you do decide to rebuild the trans and its as bad as you say it is, chances are your synchros are not the only thing that suffered. If its grinding that bad your gear is probably f*cked. If they do tear down the trans and only repair the synchros you will still have a problem shifting.

Best bet is give gearspeed a call, they have great products and services. Have them rebuild your trans which can be pretty pricey but definatly worth it.
Or you can get a used trans and hope its in good condition.

If you look around enough you can find an ls trans for pretty cheap if thats the direction you want to go.

Do NOT go with an LS tranny on a B16A.

If you do, beside it being taller gearing on a already low torque engine, you will fall out of vtec EVERY time you shift. Performance will be unsatisfactory.

Spend the money, get it done right!

I ended up replacing the entire synchro sleve and hub set plus new 2nd and 3rd gears in my ys1

I have a 90 jdm sir with stock ys1 non-lsd and the other two stock jdm crx sir in my town are both ys1 with lsd.

I didn't find this to be the case with my b16a/ls trans combo.

Never once fell out of vtec while drving it with purpose.

Wasn't a great trans tho... I agree with everything else
