Silly question before I buy a new O2 sensor.
I bought new wires, rotor, cap and plugs for my D16 A6 and finally the ECU has given me a code 1. Which from serching is the O2 sensor.
Before I go buy one, is there anything to check that would make this code go away?
Would anything else besides the O2 sensor give a code 1?
Thanks for any help!
A little background info. I got the car to run after finding two screws in one of the cylinders. It idled perfectly but backfired as soon as I touched the throttle. I then replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. The backfires are less and now the ECU is giving me a code which it wasn't before.

Now I'm really confused. I drove up to the parts store and bought an O2 sensor to find the ECU giving me 17 individual blinks. Then repeats.
I cleared the ECU before I left the parts place to find it giving me any engine light all the way home.

Yeah but the weird thing is, aren't the blinks for a 17 one long blink and 7 quick ones?
I put the O2 sensor in and it didn't do a damned thing.
I'm wondering if my distributor is bad.
