Alright, so I got my new RS (B18B1 Non-Vtec) and I'm going to be rebuilding my GSR engine over the winter, so I need to do a bit of maintenance to the RS engine to make it last all winter...

Right now all I'm worried about is the cooling system. I replaced the upper and lower radiator hoses, replaced the thermostat (but then took it out because it was still overheating), and replaced the radiator cap. So I know there's no hoses collapsing, and I know the thermostat isn't causing the problem...

I've flushed the system at least 5 times now (including a direct flush of the block and head, and a direct flush of the heater core) and its perfectly clear water that comes out every time (no rust or scale comes with the dump-flow), so do you think the water pump might be bad, or is it possible that I have a big block somewhere in the head or block?

Any help is appreciated because it's starting to get cold out and I need to isolate the problem soon... Thanks!

 

try changing your radiator. I had the same problems that you are having. Changed the radiator and no more over heating.

 

Is it overheating only when the car is not in motion? If so, it could be your fan.

 

It overheats only when the car is IN motion... when it idles, it won't overheat... it starts doing it after driving a while...

Also, the fans do kick on, but only after it's started overheating... otherwise they're only on if I have the A/C on with heat or cool air...

waterpump could be bad. if the water pump is bad it can be coroated and spin enough for it to create bubbles in your water system

 

yeah if it overheated on idle it would most likely be your thermostat but if you are moving and it is overheating i would suspect the water pump, are their any squeeling or unusual noises

 

I haven't heard any squealing or weird noises... also, it sometimes builds up a lot of pressure while driving it, but like I said, never at idle... (if I downshift and run at a higher RPM it also sometimes cools down.)

Could the head or head gasket be cracked and the engine is compressing into the water jackets, or does it sound more like a water pump issue?

Remember, there is no thermostat in it right now, new hoses (top and bottom), and a new cap.

It overheats only while I drive it, and it sometimes cools down if I downshift... Sometimes I see bubbles (maybe an airlock, but I've flushed and bled it many times), and sometimes there isn't bubbles...

Also, whenever I flush it, it's always perfectly clear water that flows from the dump...

My oil doesn't look milky, and my exhaust doesn't seem to have any evap in it...

 

Update: It's been having trouble starting lately... it sounds like a Scooby when I start it, but once I shut it off and restart it it sounds normal again... It's misfiring, so I'm going to change the plugs, oil, and fuel filter, but could water be getting into the cylinders?
