Default L3 Transmission Mainshaft Ball Bearing Question

Hi,

I am repairing an L3 transmission on an 89 civic DX. It had a disintegrated ball bearing (transmission housing side) and a cracked plastic "oil guide plate".

Looking at the mainshaft assembled and sticking up out of the clutch housing it is the top ball bearing. Then comes the snap ring (thrust shim) and plastic oil guide plate both of which are mounted in the transmission housing half.

The plastic separator in the ball bearing that keeps the ***** apart was disintegrated and the ***** fell out all over the case when I disassembled the two halves of the transmission.

I have a new oil guide plate and a new NTN ball bearing that I ordered from Honda.
The problem is that I don't know which side is up on the ball bearing.

One side has grooved plastic vents and the other side has the *****.
Does the side with the plastic vents face the gears or the oil guide plate?

I have the service manual, and it looks like the grooved plastic vents on the bearing face the oil guide plate. However the service manual shows the ball bearing on the other end of the mainshaft (clutch housing side) facing the opposite way from the way it is actually facing on my transmission. They show the ***** facing the gears and on mine the plastic vents face the gears. I have never had the tranny rebuilt so either the factory assembled it wrong 300,000 miles ago or the service manual is wrong.

Does anyone know which way the ball bearings on both ends of the mainshaft should face on the L3 Transmission for the 89 Civic DX? Do the ***** face the gears or do the plastic vents face the gears?

In this transmission replacement article the transmission going into the 89 Civic is different than stock.
http://www.google.com/search?h...honda
However, it shows the mainshaft ball bearing (top of the mainshaft) I am referring to facing the opposite way the service manual for the stock transmission (mine) shows it. ***** facing up. It seems very clear from the photo. I know it is a different year tranny, but isn't the concept the same?

Which way should it face?

Here is a diagram from drivetrain.com:

http://www.drivetrain.com/transillhonda_s20.html

It shows the L3 transmission. The bearing I am replacing is part number 134 in that diagram. It appears to show the ***** facing up (toward the transmission housing), the opposite of the service manual I have.

Part number 119 is the one I referred to above that is fine, but that is in my tranny the opposite way that is shown in my service manual). I am reluctant to disassemble the mainshaft to turn it around. And I can't tell from this diagram which way drivetrain.com has it in either.

Thanks,

Thanks for the response.

The second photo is a needle bearing. Is that from the countershaft?

The first photo I am confused about. Which bearing is that? The bearing I am talking about is on top of the mainshaft above the synchro that the white #1 arrow is pointing to here:

Does the plastic vented side of the ball bearing point up as it shows in my service manual or do the ***** point up as in the photo?

OK, thanks. So the service manual is right then.

Also, I guess then the factory put the ball bearing on the bottom end of the mainshaft upside down because it shows the ***** facing the gears (up) in the service manual and the plastic down, yet on mine the plastic is up and the ***** are down on the bottom ball bearing. Is that correct? Os that the way the bottom ball bearing is on yours?

Thanks again for this help.

Joe

OK, so the manual is wrong about the bottom ball bearing, but right about the top?

Plastic faces gears on bottom ball bearing. ***** face the gears on the top one as you mentioned above?

Do I have it right now?

Thanks again,

Joe

LOL,

It is pretty funny when you think about it. ***** facing outward and all. Thanks for the help. Both plastic vents on the ball bearings do in fact now face the gears so I am all set. This was fun and thanks again for your patience.

Regards,

Joe

Is there a gasket between the clutch housing and the main housing? I do not see one listed in the parts available @ http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/. I too am going to replace the main shaft bearing. It is making a loud whining noise when accelerating and under load. Does this sound like the main shaft bearing?
