i just took the rotating assembly out my my b16 .. and the pistons are very dirty..
what is a good way to take the grease and oil off of them so i can re do the rings..?

also the block is completely done .. i have a pr4 b18a1 block should i put them in there
or what would you recommend...

( the block is completely cracked and 2 of the mounting points where the int shaft go are broken ... so that block is already gone...

 

PR3 pistons in an LS block (with a B16 head) will give you 11.3:1 compression. P30 pistons (2nd gen B16) will give you 11.6:1. It's a pretty nice combo. If you do this, make sure you install ARP rod bolts. Also get the whole rotating assembly balanced while you're at it. Just for longevity purposes.

 

1.Break a old ring in half and use the edge of it to clean out ring grooves.

2.Fill up a bucket with a cleaning solvent or throttle body cleaner let them soak for a long time.

3.Or take them to a machine shop and have them cleaned.
(Make sure to mark rods and piston orentation prior to removal)

 

Beige is right, it works good for cleaning the lands. Jus be careful while turning the piston in ur hand, the lands can sometimes be sharp As for the tops, I use the 3M pad on an angled die grinder (its like a scouring pad... the maroon works a lil better than the green IMO). It doesn't get every bit of carbon build up but it gets most of it.
