Civic DX HX LX and EX? Vtec?
Okay fellas, I'm new to the world of tuning Hondas, but not new the mechcanics. (I've been into bikes for awhile)
I know that Vtec has the *****, but I DON'T want to buy one with the Vtec. I'd rather buy the non-Vtec Civic, but pick up the parts needed to make a vtec (top end/valves/etc.) That way, I'm insured less, because ON PAPER I have the wimpy non-Vtec Honda, but under the hood I'm packin' the ponies.
First question,
What 2-door models have the non VTEC?
Second question,
Can I even turn a basic block into a Vtec? Is it just a simple Top end kit?
Thanks a bunch, Drive hard, but drive safe.

VOODOO man. Its coming trust me.
But while you wait for him to come,
do a search on "mini-me" or minime
should be able to find a slew of information...
But to some it up, you will need an entire vtec head and vtec compatible or programable ecu. EX civics coupes and SI hatches have sohc vtec. SI civic coupes are dohc vtec.

Okay, we're getting somewhere...
I thought the VTEC was ALWAYS DOHC, but it's available in single too?
I don't know about you guys, but double's the way to go...
but ALL 2 doors (99-200X) have VTECs?

yea you cant just get parts and make vtec out of it on a nonvtec sohc motor. civics dont come dohc without vtec. engine swaps are quite common in the honda turning world. b16 b18c are dohc vtec motors most commonly used in swaps
the 96-00 EX coupe(and sedan?) has sohc vtec
the 99-00 Si coupe has dohc vtec

No no, that's not what I want to do, what I'm asking is:
I want to take a 2-door civic with a NON VTEC DOHC engine,
And then put on a DOHC VTEC cylinder head + the cpu chip (right?) and make it (the non VTEC 2-door) a legitimate 2-door VTEC, just like if someone have a VTEC stock?
Basically, I want to know if I can take a non VTEC, swap cylinder heads+cpu and turn it into a true VTEC.

ok, now I got it. The ONLY DOHC VTEC engine PERIOD is the Civic Si, but can I get a 2-door coupe with it? Or does it only come in the hatchback model?
So, I CAN get the Si engine (1.6 liters and 1.6 only right?) DOHC VTEC and stick it in a regular 1999-200X civic COUPE right?

Im gonna do you a favor, read this:

vtec is not the end all to import performance, let alone honda performance. Read this and save yourself from some flames!

A 92-95 2 door non-VTEC.............................................g et a DX coupe
Want a non-VTEC DOHC motor and drop a VTEC head on it......get an LS/VTEC conversion
Want a non-VTEC DOHC motor and drop a VTEC head on it......get an LS/VTEC conversion
i'm gonna try to make this simple...
no USDM civic ever came with a DOHC engine except for the 99-00 Si and the '02+ Si. and these cars are DOHC VTEC's. there are no civic's w/ DOHC non-VTEC's unless someone swapped them in there or the car was imported from europe, japan...
sounds like your best bet would be a LS/VTEC (LS block, VTEC head) or CR-VTEC (B20 block, VTEC head).
or maybe a ZC swap.

Cause coupes are the way to go!
BTW, I had a 94 Civic EX coupe, and I swapped in a 95 LS motor (DOHC non-VTEC). Now I can easily add a DOHC VTEC head or go for some F/I.

Let me take the liberty and help you out here, buddy.
Ok, your purpose is to buy a civic with a shitty engine in it and than modify it so you can go faster, yet to the insurance compnay its a cheap little crappy car.
No problem.
Almost everybody does this.
Like stated ealier there is only one civic which has dohc, which is vtec.
but don't buy that because that is way overpriced, and the insurance is defenatly high on that.
So back to your question:
Just buy any civic, you like.
Make sure its NOT a si, or ex. (they both have vtec) sohc vtec might i add.
After you get the car, the best and cheapest thing to do is change the entire engine. So after you buy the car, buy a dohc vtec engine and slap it on your civic. and than walllaaa.. You're one fast ****, and to the insurance its a civic with a crappy engine.
hope this helps
Dammit guys, you're all great, thanks for all the help.
And here's my plan: Cvics seem to be a dime a dozen around here (probably like that everywhere) so I'd like to pick up a grandma SOHC 106hp, whatever, (maybe coming off a lease, my bro picked up a mint '98 integra for 'bout $19000 [Canadian] mind you it dosn't have the VTEC, but that can be fixed) and then get a WHOLE VTEC DOHC...
Now there's two DOHC VTECs, the 99-00 one (1.6 litre), and the i-VTEC 2.0 litre for '02.
Are BOTH of 'em interchangeable?
And can both of these be put in ANY civic coupe newer then 94?
One other thing, I hear the '01 has struts instead of regular A-arms (or wishbones if you will) Is that a good thing? Or just another money saving scheme?
BTW, to the guy who was surprised that I spelled VTEC right the first time, I did a LITTLE homework before coming here, and why would we spell VTEC 'v-tech' when it stands for
Variable valve
Timing
Electronic lift
Control
Thanks alot you guys, drive on!
