ok so im thinking about buying a gt-40 for 250. just wanted to know everyones opinion on it. i know its a big turbo. its not going on my car for awhile. but i figured for 250 even if it needs to be rebuilt would it be worth it?

This is a garrett t4 turbo, You can look up the specs at garrett's website its in the gt-40 series family. the exhaust side is a little rusty as can be expected but the intake side is super clean. I don't even know if its been used because there isnt even any soot inside the exhaust side.. "

i've emailed him and asked him what kind of car is was on, how much boost was ran, and how many miles are on it.
"I have no idea what the turbo came off of. nor the miles. it has no shaft play i bought a garage because i build hot rods/lowriders,etc and it was in a box. it is used but again i dont know what it came off of but it is a garrett t4 and i went to their website and it says its a part of the gt-40 series family thats all i know. im more of a superchared big block/small block chevy guy so turbos aren't my thing. i also know that you'll have to run an external wastegate"

soooo i need everyone opinion before i go out and buy it. i dont want to waste money right now because im slowly piecing together things to turbo my car.

that dood must have some big hands because that looks a little small.

 

That's a truck straight T4 turbocharger with an extremely large exhaust wheel It will not run very well on our cars as it was designed w/ a different purpose in mind. even on the rebuild (about 400 bucks), it's not really worth the cost.

 

that's not a GT40, at least not a GT40R

this is a Garrett GT42R and yes it's mounted on the motor (same size as the GT40)

 

was gonna say, that turbo in his hand is way to small to be a gt40

 

alright thanks everyone got another question cause there was another turbo i was looking at. just wanted to see what kinda of turbo it is its a garrett but the guy doesnt know what one exactly. he wants 350 for it.

 

You are setting yourself up for failure going and looking to buy whatever's cheap instead of picking a turbo out that fits your needs and looking for that.

 

i know i know im kinda short on money right now and i really wanna turbo my car....

well im looking to get a bigger turbo because when all is said and done i want my car to have around 500.

but for now i want around 300-350ish if thats reasonable...

 

Edit: Blah, you answered some of the questions already...

First deciding what you want your car to do, where you want your power curve to be, what your intended power range will be, and how much are you willing to spend to reach the first three, will better help you know which turbo is right for you.

i want it to have high end power. i want the turbo to be fully spooled at 5000 rpms. i know there will be alot of turbo lag. max hp i want is like 575-550. but like i said it'll be awhile before that... im looking to get anywhere from 300-350 right now. as far as money goes im somewhat limited right now which is why im trying to find some cheaper used stuff. just to get my project going and then i would go in and replace everything.

If you are short on money, don't bother trying to boost you car. There are going to be a bunch of startup costs and you're going to be stuck with a car that's half done that you can't drive.

If you can't afford to budget twice as much as you think it's going to cost, don't bother.

 

well the thing is I'm buying parts now and bugeting my money. I'm not putting anything on my car till I have the money to do so. For everything I wanna do I'm figuring it'll be anywhere from 7000+ if I'm lucky. I totaly see your point don't get me wrong but I'm gonna try and boost it even if it takes me a few years... If not I'm just gonna buy a bike and be done with my car. Thanks for your help.
