i searched, returned 3 threads so i finally figured i'd ask.

I want to build a boosted b20 possibly b20v in the next few months, i'm a noob at turbo stuff. I know a b20 has weak sleeves, but i was planning to build the motor anyways, just unsure on what parts to get, whats good, whats crap, etc.

any input or suggestions on setup would be appreciated.

btw, i'm not looking for 500+ hp, just something fun to drive and still be competitive at the track.

we need to know budget, and ultimate goal. i can build a not 500whp b20 easily. a stock b20 is not 500whp.(trying not to be too sarcastic)

so figure your goal and go from there.

good rods, good pistons, good management, and a straight t3t4 will be gobbs and gobbs of fun.

 

i recently got a better job, and bought a daily driver. I would like to spend the least amount, but i don't want to skimp and pay for it in the long run either. I was planning on a block gaurd, pistons, rods, bearings, turbo kit, good tune, etc i've just never been around anything turbo and have no idea what works and what doesn't. I'd like to be in the 300-400 hp range.

 

dont worry about the block guard, any decent rod/piston combo, stock bearings, you dont need to break the bank on a turbo also. i made 330 with a bad clutch, on a drag kit with a t04b.

spend wisely on decent parts/used parts, and youll get your goal.

you dont need gt tuebos, or high dollar stuff.

 

i'm just not sure which rods and pistons to buy. I have never delt with pressure on a motor before. i'm also confused on the whole t3, t4 t40b numbers (i know super noob). I just don't want to get this thing built and it come apart due to some cheap *** part i thought would be good. i plan to use either the peak boost, or full race kit offered here on HT.. any pro's or cons with either of those kits, or is their something better suited for what i'm trying to do?

I have a boosted B20 and love it. TORQUE! I have a GE block guard for the saftey-Don't know why you wouldn't want one? I have JE-9:1 Pistons and eagle rods, stock crank. Pulls hard, I'm using a 60 trim Garrett turbo adn seems to be working great fro the engine.

Boostedcivicsir.... Is there any reason why you wouldn't want to run a block guard? I know it can slow coolant down, but is'nt the extra strength worth it? Those stock sleeve can't hold up for to long without help...Can they?

I havn't dyno'd it yet. But, It feels way stonger on 5 lbs boost than my old B16 with 10 lbs boost. My B16 made 240hp so, I'm guessing more than that, and a BUNCHES of TORQUE!!!

 

clean setup. i'm looking for mid 300's - 400 hp. maybe with a good tune and tons of boost i can reach my goal. have you looked into a b20vtec?

 

You'll be more than happy with 300 on the street. I wouldnt push a stock sleeved B20 to 400 whp, with the one-piece thin sleeve design of the B20 block, getting that high in whp will leave VERY little margin for error on your tune. Not saying it cant be done, but peace of mind is paramount. 300 whp on a B20 is gonna rip like a **** on the street. TORQUE!!!

 

i was somewhat worrying about the sleeve issue also. i'd just like to experience 300 hp. a friend has a greddy kit on a gsr swapped ek just not sure how much hp.

what turbo would be my best bet for 300 ish hp? also i don't want to have a super high revving car. i'd like to spool at pretty low rpm's, is that possible also?

 

if your willing to go 350whp or more i would suggest saving that money and investing it into sleeves (darton, benson?!) and i wouldnt keep the same bore. JE pistons with some eagle rods with hondata s300, some rc 550's and a good turbo setup and your there.. just my .02

A simple Garrett T3/T04E 50 trim or 57 trim w/ a .63 a/r exhaust housing will get you there, no problems. If you're looking to get a Peak Boost or Full Race kit, you can get the Garrett turbo of your choice.

The B20 is not a high revving engine anyways, and those two turbos have really good spool. The 57 trim will flow more cfm, so that will give you more room to grow, should you build the motor stronger later, and go for more hp.
