im hearing alot about a 3 stage vtec. whats this all about. i search'd and nothing.

can this 3 stage work on a d16y8? can u convert?

 

It's a 130 hp Vtec engine, which is with a JDM D15B SOHC engine, you can get them already assembled from Japan/Malasia, i've even seen some people on Ebay in the US who have already gotten them from Japan. It has 3 stages (hence the name). E (economy) D (drive) and S (sport). They limit your rpm's and if you're in E mode the motor switches to 12 valve mode instead of 16, and it's possible to reach more than 50 mpg. D is for normal driving, and of course S is for cruising. The best way to reach its highest potential is to pair it with a MMT (multimatic, aka CVT transmission) which doesn't have gears, but it's actually more of a pulley contraption. The thing I like most about it, is you can slam on the gas pedal, reach 7k rpms and continue accelerating without having to change gears. Honda made economy and power work together for the first time, and I personally think it's one of the best engines out there (with the MMT), especially with the way gas prices are going now of days.

Those are actually the CVT transmission settings, US HXs had similar settings (S, D, and L) The engine does have 3 stages though Vtec-E (12 valve operation), normal 16 valve operation and finally standard SOHC vtec.

 

say i would want to put the 3stage motor in my 98 ex....would i have to add another connector for the second vtec sol? and what about a knock sensor....do they have one? i know the only usdm single slam that came with a knock is the y8.
