Default 89 Civic DX swap

As everyone knows the 89 DX engine sucks. I want to stay legal meaning passing emissions so JDM swaps are not being considered anymore.

Can motors from 92-95 D16Z6 (Si/EX), and 96-99? D16Y8 (EX) be dropped into my car with no problems? Can someone tell me what parts I will need if it can be successfully done? Anyone know a guide that can tell me how to correctly perform this?

Thank you for your time and help!

How hard is the wiring? I'm pretty sure with my dads help it can be done. I knew this part wouldnt be an easy task. Would anyone know of a guide that can walk me through this procedure?

the z6 or y8 will work, and drop into your stock mounts, with slight modifactions to one. The dx will need to be converted from DPFI to MPFI. You can either run a crx si ecu, with an rpm switch to activate vtec, or convert it to OBD-1 and use a p28 ecu. I would swap out the dx tranny for an SI tranny, do a search on here for directions doing the dpfi - mpfi conversion, and the whole swap, its been discussed a billlion times

How much harder is the obd1 conversion with the p28 ecu as compared to the Si ecu w/rpm switch to activate vtech? What is more economical? Will both methods pass a visual test?

what do u mean by a visual test? If your talkin emissions i have no clue...and you can buy a conversion harness off people here on HT for odb1, which will make it alot easier........and heres a few links for the dpfi - mpfi...

Sweet links, thanks!

This is what I have learned you can say.. Please correct me if im wrong

I have a 89 Honda Civic DX HB
I will need the following:

96+ D16Y8 motor (no tranny, everything else)
91 Civic Si Tranny?
DPFI -> MPFI Conversion
OBD-1 Conversion kit (which i will buy on here)
P28 ECU

Im not to sure on the parts there. I read a few posts about this swap, and there are more steps that i did not know i would have to do like the dpfi -> mpfi. Are there better parts that i can get as compared to what i said?

Keep your DX tranny and swap your final Drive. you can get a final drive alot cheeper then a full tranny. Gears are all the same. ECU you got good info about that all ready. If you keep it with the SI or 88-89 teg ECU's its easier then converting to OBD I

use a 88-89 teg 5 speed ecu for the higher redline and better stock fuel curves and a vafc to activate vtec and tune. My z6 rebuild parts and vafc are on the way
