New transmission noise, need input
Well, this is the 4th transmission in 12 months, been going thru a bad string of D series tranny. First one grenaded in a week, second on was stuck in second gear when i installed it (even tho the gear selector worked fine, reverse pulled forward), third leaked oil from the casing and now this one makes a horrible horrible noise.
The noise is abnormal, one I've never heard a transmission make before. It's weird, it's a loud, howelling noise that is only really heard in 1st and second, mainly when I take off. If I floor it the sound of the engine overpowers it. The transmission goes into gear smoothly and the noise does not appear when I'm cruising or clutched in, which makes me beleive it's the release bearing maybe?
I don't know, maybe it's time to sell all this EF crap and buy a new car.

No. It's main shaft bearings. YOu wanna hear a noisy tranny? LIsten to mine dude. It growls and makes all kinda of noise. It's been like that ever since I got it 1 year ago. I thought it was a throw out bearing too. I did the clutch and all parts and noise was still there. It'll probably last forever like it is, but you need to either buy a Reman trans or overhaul it. You run into all kinda of problems with used Manual transmissions. Your biggest clue is when you press in the clutch it goes away right? Thats when the mainshaft stops spinning So the noise disappears.

That's exactly what happens, but the main shaft would not stop spinning when cluctched in just due to how a manual transmission is made. All clutching in does is take the load off, but that makes sense since my noise is found when the transmission is loaded, or being loaded (clutching out to take off). ****, oh well, I'll drive it like this for now. I really can't complain, I picked up the transmission for 20$ thru a local connection.
Edit:

Number 11 is the bearing we are talking about, right?

Yeah Mine IS probably louder than yours and it's still pulling. So you'll be fine for a while. Is that pic of the Wagovan the car we're talking about? I'd really like to find a Wagovan. I think they're awesome. Nice color too. Same as mine.
Yes I do believe #11 is it. You'd need to measure main shaft run-out prior to bearing replacement.
