Default My questions about a B18C5 swap in a 93 del sol

Wow, my God you are all smart... I really appreciate any links or whatever. I read for several hours on the debate for the B18C(1) vs. B18C5 --- I've decided (I think) to go with the B18C5... but I have a few questions that I can't seem to find --- so if you can point me to some links I'm happy to do the time reading... BUT if you feel like giving me a quick answer please feel free to do so!

Background:
> 93 Del Sol; originally a 1.5 non-vtec
> A friend swapped in a 1.6 v-tec but did not change the ECU (?)
> Looks like friend didn't change timing belt... it blew a few days ago; so I think I'll just go ahead and swap again (seems like a good 'reason' to Mrs. Merkley right?)

I've got a B18C5 lined up -- but I don't know if I'm getting the "right thing"... to be honest, I'm really not sure what I'm getting.

Either I'm getting this:

ENGINE INCLUDES:Complete engine block with head Intake and Exhaust Manifold,
Flywheel AT/MT, Crankshaft Pulley
Injecctors, Valve cover, Spark plug wires

--- or this: ---

ENGINE INCLUDES:
ENGINE BLOCK
5 SPEED LSD TRANSMISSION
INTAKE MANIFOLD
EXHAUST MANIFOLD
DOWN PIPE
FUEL RAIL
THROTTLE BODY
VTEC SOLENOID
DISTRIBUTOR
ALTERNATOR
STARTER
AC COMPRESSOR
POWER STEERING PUMP
INJECCTORS
SPARKPLUGS
OIL PAN
VALVE COVER
USED MIDSHAFT
ECU
WIRE HARNESSES
STOCK MOUNTS AND SENSORS
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The "cash" (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) price is $3,660 installed with a 1 month warranty. It will include something like "a machined file wheel"...

<U>Questions:</U>
1) Is it even possible for them to do the swap if they didn't use/include all the stuff in the "full" list?

2) With the engine, install and warranty.... how good's that price? (if anyone has contacts for the Toronto, Ontario area please mention them (if allowed)).

3) I asked about the short warranty, he said it's only 1 month because people race these types of engines, blah, blah, -- bottom line, that's all he's giving)
EDIT: So the question part (that I didn't originally include); Is 1 month short for a warranty?

4) I have a short air intake with a K&N filter on my old engine... can I still use it on this one?

5) I have a Rocket2 exhaust -- is that what people mean when they talk about I/T/E tuning? or am I cheese? (but it did make the 1.6 sound like a little race car at 7,000 RPM!)

6) If I don't change anything else, like suspension, etc will I be okay?

EDIT #2 - new question based on more reading
7) Should they include something like a compression test or something "measurable" to show me the engine is good?

Sorry for the noob questions; I'm starting to make the leap from paying to doing... but it's quite the uphill...

Thanks (and sorry it's so long) - I'm hoping that I've provided enough information...

Merkley

it has pros and cons to all your options... also 3600 for a b18c5 swap sounds way to cheap imo... but if its real your gettin a hell of a deal...

Question 0: a machined FLY wheel=] just fyi.
1. I dont get it.... if they dont use everything, then that means they have all the parts. if they dont invlude anything on the list, then they will most likely charge you for it.
2. I think thats a fair price for the engine, the labor, and the warranty. That seems almost too good of a price for a b18c5 and the labor of the swap + the warranty....I'd go ahead and double check the prices. Do they keep your old motor??? That price is insanely cheap imo. Thought the b18c5 motor goes for like 5k, alone for the whole swap.
3. I don't see the question, nor would i know the answer if this was bs or whatever.
4. Yes if its the b18c5, itll sit funny if its the b18c1.
5. I/H/E
Intake-You got that down.
Headers
Exhaust- You got that down as well.
6.Yes, But the front might be lower than usual.

1. I don't know what to say really other then make sure you get a full swap, So make sure you do your home work first.
2. Installed!?!? unless the price of a Type R has fallen latley this is an EXCELENT price.
3. Is this a question lol
4. Yes if you want to you can reuse your old intake, Its your choice
5. It's actually called I/H/E (intake, Header, Exhaust) and unless you have some sort of engine management you cant really tune for it
6. Everything you need to change should come in a full swap, suspension or any thing else of the nature is unecessary

you will also need del sol b series shift linkage because integra or civic will not work

Yep and my old ECU... old everything... he said they will re-use some of my parts as there's 'probably still lots of stuff that is okay'

I originally asked about a B16A then he gave me 2660 installed, same conditions, I was happily surprised and asked about the B18C5 and he said "it's a thousand more"

Even more reason to get the B18C5...

Which I assume would mean some type of handling issue ... or wear ... or something bad/problematic...?

Thanks for your help!

Yep, trying to do so... how will I know if it's a "FULL SWAP" versus a "??? SWAP" (partial?) --- like how can I know if he actually did change the transmission...? Would it LOOK different (ie, I take before and after photos?)

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by CTR_B &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">2. Installed!?!? unless the price of a Type R has fallen latley this is an EXCELENT price.

He told me that they have "lots of them" right now so he's knocking the price down by $1,000.

Here are the links for the two engines shown on his site... you'll see his math doesn't add up --- not even close... so now I'm concerned.... But then again, I'm talking about giving him $3660 in CASH --- in this area there are many business that will do a great deal for CASH deals.... (and yes, I do plan to get a receipt still, oddly enough they have no trouble with doing that)

FULL:

REDUCED:

I'm supposed to be going in on Tuesday to do the paperwork before getting my car towed in ... anything watch for?

Thanks much!

Do not get the reduced one, it wont run when swapped in, unless you have a b16 in your car already, then thats perfect. if you have a z6 or a y8 in your car, do not go for the reduced one, again. your car will not run when the swap is done.

Default Here's the 'deal' it's neither of what are posted

basically I am getting the swap done, which includes the edu, harness, watet pump, timing belt, etc... and whatever else it needs. He said when it's all said and done he'll take me for a test drive when it's done. So no Lsd for me, but from what I can tell the B16 transmission will be fine. (Comments welcomed - but there is no way I have the money for the full swap incl. Tranny)

So, if I can drive it away --- good enuf?

FYI saw compression test on website, each cylinder is around 210. Would it be paranoid to get my own compression test anyway? How much would that cost?

Thanks
Merkley

I retract my previous statement, I should have looked more closely, I thought the OP had a civic, In the case of the del sol you definately need the del sol linkage.

So, if someone has the time could they explain to me what of these parts listed above need to be swapped to make it a "good swap" or "full swap" or whatever the right term is? I'm now doubting all this even more... like isn't all that stuff listed (other than the transmission) just part of the engine? &lt;SiGH&gt;

Also, in reviewing those items I saw "AC COMPRESSOR" -- does that mean I will get A/C with this? I haven't had that in either engine.. would that be any type of issue or something extra I will have to do?

Thanks,
Merkley

When you buy a JDM engine from an importer you generally get a bunch of stuff that are often considered "accessories" these include: distributor, alternator, power steering pump. A/C compressor, flywheel and clutch, intake and exhaust manifolds. Generally if you buy a USDM engine you just get a long block: block, head and if your lucky intake and exhaust. This is one of the reasons I prefer buying JDM engines, if you buy some of the SOHC vtec engines you actually get more in accessories than what the entire engines costs. The thing is if your doing an engine swap, as opposed to replacing a stock engine with another stock engine you often need at least some of the accessories as your old ones wont be compatible. In your case if you already had a B16 you could reuse your transmission. Your mentioned that this engine comes with an A/C compressor, if you don't have A/C then you wont be using it, simply remove it from the engine and try to sell it, they are quite expensive to buy from the dealer.

Default Re: My questions about a B18C5 swap in a 93 del sol (94EG8)

what you're getting is just a longblock.
it may come with an ac compressor but if you dont have an ac system then no, you wont get AC.

full swap:
complete changeover, meaning they provide everything necessary for the motor to start and drive if you have the right ecu.
example: cant start the motor if u dont have ur current or the correct corresponding obd ecu.

parts you'll need:
del sol vtec shift linkage
b series vtec distributor corresponding to your engine harness
alternator
transmission
half shaft
axles
94-01 integra t bracket
94-01 integra/93-97 del sol vtec driver side block mount
(integra has 3 bolt to whereas the del sol has only 2 bolts to hold rubber bushing mount)

if i missed anything or gave out incorrect info please correct me as you wish.

depending if you have all the hardlines/plumbing for the a/c system you shouldn't have much difficulty. But its all determined by how much was left when it was taken out.

Looks like I've found full B18C for $3900 +GST (and shipping).

It comes with "everything" (man I hate that word when I don't really understand the scope). Dude said it has axels, shift linkage, LSD, ECU and everything else...

I'm getting SO excited, this is far better than Christmas!
I originally thought I had a B16A in there; but it turns out I have a D15B -- so I'll be going from ~127 to ~195... 68 HP! I thought my car was 'pretty good' before... I can't imagine how it's going to pull with over 50% more HP...

I live in Oshawa (near enough to Toronto - so TO locations are fine) -- does anyone know any places to get the swap done that they would recommend *OR* places they WOULD NOT recommend (those are just as important!).

BTW, just wanted to say I really appreciate everyone's help and feedback here!

Default B18C5 full swap

Looks like after about 30 phone calls, hours of reading I've found what I'm looking for:

http://www.torontojdm.com/lite...id=99

Getting it done with new clutch, machined flywheel*, new water pump and new timing belt all said and done for $5,100 cash.

I think that's a reasonable price based on my reading... but my 1 remaining question is; do I really need a new flywheel or should I get the machined one. They'll knock of $50 if I don't get the machined one, but they want me to provide my own.... sooooo I could use some info and links on a flywheel for a B18C5 that's going in a del Sol... (if that's not a dumb *** thing to say - like I said, haven't started to read about this yet)

Thanks in advance and for all the feedbacks, much appreciated!
Merkley

B18C5 in 93 del sol... 96 hours and counting.....
