Default Timimg belt broke... can you recommend me an engine for my 93 del sol?

I blew my timing belt at about 140Km/H --- apparently the "best thing" to do is to get a new engine put in. The shop where it is now said they did a scope test and there is at least 4 bent valves (I think they said valves) and that they did a leak test and it's "not good" -- they recommend me to get a new engine... which is something they don't do, so it's probably "real"...(?)

The problem is I don't know squat about doing this... so I would really like some advice on what engine I could put in. It was orginally a 1.5 non-vtec engine; but my friend swapped the engine for a 1.6 v-tec (jap. import). He *did not* change anything else (except maybe some type of wiring harness?) as far as I know and unfortunately he is not with us anymore... perhaps some people here knew him as SolMan or HondaMan (RIP Suleman).

So, I'm looking for the "mom" level of explanation here (pretend your explaining it to your mom and she really does care and really does want to learn). What do I need to change, transmission, ECU, etc?

Also, I live in Oshawa Ontario Canada and would appreciate contacts for where to get the stuff (Toronto is a hop-skip-and-jump away). I have a recommended mechanic lined up (Amogenx Auto) , but they won't procure parts, etc.

I'm looking for the full range... this has to be "approved" by Mrs. Merkley... so give me the "here's the fastest meanest thing" solution to "this will get you back to where you are"...

Thanks in advance... this is a mixed blessing I guess.... I've wanted to do something to my car... just not something that made me do it.

If anyone is interested in talking on the phone, I'll give you my number through a private message ... and it would be greatly appreciated.

there is enough information and people on this board that can walk you through the troubles you have. i work at the a dealership, and i definately wouldnt recommend a new engine. first off, its a lot easier to take the head off, replace the valves and slap on a new timing belt, then it is to pull the whole thing out, and put a new one in (in my opinion). Lucky for us, the people who write the factory service manuals for honda's treat us like children. honestly, a ten year old can read and understand what to do (not trying to belittle you btw) my advice is to order a factory service manual, read it, ask questions on honda-tech and LEARN. spend $500 on parts, tools, beer, and a manual. then gain the knowlage you'll want when working on this stuff in the future, and still have the tools!

cheers!

Thanks Simple..... no worries; I don't take any offense. All the work done with previously on my del Sol was by a friend of mine that has passed away (he used to be on as SolMan (I think it was here; or some other honda forum)) -- he would not teach me anything though, which was strange b/c he contributed to the forums so much (from what I've read from online friends).

Also, the "stupid" factor is very high, so I'm very motivated because I heard this squeaking and didn't know where to look or what it could be -- I had a friend that thought he knew about cars listen; said it was the alternator.... guess he didn't "KNOW" about cars either.

Thanks for the input... I'm going to be noob for a while, but it looks like there are a great bunch of guys (and gals?) here that know a lot.

Cheers!

You mentioned that your friend bought and installed a Japanese imported (JDM) engine. Does this mean you are interested in a little more power for your car than the D15B7 offered? Or are you just looking to fix you car on the cheap?

For what it's worth to you, if I were in your shoes and I just wanted to get my car running again, I would source a low mileage D15B7 block, (assuming your current transmission is worth reusing) install it and be done with it.

Now if I were looking for a little more pep, that is a different story. This is an excellent site to learn about that.

FYI you won't be able to use the Private Message feature for a few more days (until your restricted trial user period has passed).

Yeah the OBD0/OBD1 engine are so tough...

I've seen so many bottom end problems with OBD2A/B engines.

Sucks I own one
