Default can i swap a y7 head onto a y8 block?

Hi, i have a d16y8 and i want to swap my y7 head onto it, because i have tapping noise. most likely the valves. Since i can hear it under the valve cover i decided to swap the y7 head i already have, onto the y8 bloack.

can i still run the y8 computer? i have header, cai, exhaust, so i think the extra fuel would help out right?

I don't think it'll work since the Y8 computer will want to try and engage VTEC around 5200 RPMs and your Y7 head won't have that.

from a technical perspective yeah you can bolt a Y7 head up to a Y8 block, doesn't really much sense though, you'll need a Y7 ECU to get it to run right and you'll loose vtec and something like 25hp. I'd do a valve adjustment first before i started swapping heads. Even if that doesn't fix it i think it just let it tap unless its rediculously bad.

i hhave the y7 computer, but that would require me swapping my iacv and i dont know if i still have the 3 wire plug.

also the tapping is pretty loud. feels like ive lost power...so im guessing that **** is [freak]d up bad.

valve adjustment? you have any good links on that? i was thinking about swapping my y7 head on and keeping it under 4000 rpms till i figure the rest of the **** out and id be using the y8 cpu too

does that sound like it would work for now? for a few weeks atleast?

I haven't got time to search around right now, but i've definately seen guides on it before, do some searching, you should find something.

Define "work". It will run, it wont run well, its gonna run rich, throw vtec codes and probably just generally gonna run kinda crappy. Try to find another Y8 head at least, preferably from someone who spun a rod bearing and not from someone who blew a head gasket.

i just need it to run. i cant deal without a car.and it wont run too rich because ill be under 5krpms

also the y8 has 240 ccs
the y7 190 cc

so its not that much of a dif if i drove it normal

if this is true, you had a realy bad y8 or your vtec wasnt engaging. my advice would to get another y8 head. everything is just better. the y7 has a nasty/crappy IM.

i know that the local honda would adjust my valves for 82 dollars because its like an hour... if you have money to spend on a head i would just do that and see if that helps... i have a valve tick as well, and im just going to take it in one day and do it

Headgasket, intake manifold gasket if there isn't one on the head, ideally some new headbolts as well. Again though I think your gonna be worse off swapping the head, and if you're competent enough to swap heads you should be competent enough to adjust the valves. Heres a how to on it https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1305086 Try that first.

No, don't even think about it.

Intake 0.007 - 0.009
Exhaust 0.009 - 0.011

Yeah I went through a couple of months where i dropped 2 engines in my '94 civic. I smartened up the second time bought a low mileage JDM engine, first one was a worn out D15B7 from the junkyard that blew a headgasket after i put 6000kms on it.

well i tried adjusting the valves but it still taps so im guessing its the lifters or something?

idk what to do, maybe swap the y7 head on there and convert back to the p2p ecu and 3 wire iacv

this sucks.

but some dude wants to trade me his 01 jetta 1.8t with 110,000 miles for my car so? sounds good?

I'd never trade my Honda for a Jetta. I've seen so many of those just start falling apart after a few years.

Check the VIN, if it starts with a 3 stay far, far away. Mexican jettas suck, they have eletrical problems you couldn't even dream of. German built ones (VIN starts with a W i think) are supposed to be alright. If it was me i'd just fix what i had, all it needs is a head.

quick question.

i was going to put the y7 head on. i have both cam gears saying UP and i stuck a dowel rod into each cylinder as i rotated the crank to make sure it was tdc.

now as long as i did both of those to perfect tdc and it says UP on both, i can just grab it and swap it right?

[and if you were wondering i had the y7 block too, thats how i could rotate it. it just has a hole in its #3 part of the block ]
