Default 98 CRV rear diff possibly going bad?

Well I'm in the market for a CRV and recently one came up around my area. A "project CRV" considering it needs a head gasket and "possibly" a rear differential.

I was wondering how often the rear diff goes bad and also what it would cost to replace? I've done some research and it sounds as though it may just need a good fluid change but I'm thinking worst case scenarios before I consider picking it up.

Thanks for any help,

Nick

If it was run dry or fluid was never changed it could be chewed to peices inside. Sounds like a beat on cute ute!!

In my 8 years of Honda service I have never seen a CR-V or Element rear end fail. I'm sure it just needs a fluid change.

I figured that much as it's just not a very common part to fail at all.

Thank you for the help/insight

it prob needs a hard flush. Flush, refill, drive in a tight circle for 30 min, drain and refill again. Done.
