b16 check engine light
i started my car up and the check engine light came on solid... not a good sign, so me and my buddy swapped out ecu's and it ran fine. so i ordered in a new ecu.
2 weeks later i get it and toss it in. and again 2 seconds after starting my car the engine light comes on. solid once again.
it isnt in limp mode like it was before but i have no vtec.
does anyone have any sort of troubleshooting ideas or methods that work??? or how to extract the codes???

if its obd1 just count the blinks once you jumped the harness thats under your dash. Then refer back to a manual like haynes and it should reveal your problem or like the other guy said, go to autozone or whatever and use their scanner.
well i work at a garage but we dont work on imports.. its a chrysler dealership... one of the mechanics has a scan tool for this apparently, but he couldnt find where to plug the adapter in..
i've never used a scan tool before but i've seen it done, but on a obd2 car. The harness was underneath the dash behind the radio. But for obd1 cars, i never had to use the scan tool because it was more convenient to just pull the harness out from underneath the glove box and jump the harness. I dont know if that harness is the same one you would use for the scan tool but if all else fails just jump it with a paper clip or speaker wire and count how many times the check engine light blinks, and voila you have your codes. I believe there is a sticky on the EG page about the codes.
here you go buddy... https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1901557

that wont work on mine i dont think... i have no power to that connector apparently. thats what the scan tool showed.
i will try it and see what happens.. the plug i used with the scan tool was a 3 pin connector, which is the honda adapter.. i will try this method and see what happens.
thanks

Wouldn't you find out what the problem is before you go buy a new ECU for it? Seems kinda backwards if you ask me. Was your buddys ECU the right one that you switched with or was it different. Some ECU's look for some things that others don't, so therefore, if it doesn't sense a problem, no CEL.
my ecu was fried, i was in limp mode.. 3 grand rev limiter, solid engine light... he "jumped" it and the light stayed on so we swapped ecu's and took it for a boot. and it ran mint.
so now something else has went. and i dont know what is it. and i am not sure where or how he jumped it.
