Motor rebuild... DIY?
So as i am getting more and more comfortable in my car, I am going faster, revving higher and spending more and more time in VTEC.
Unfortunately that also means I am using more oil.
I went to the track last Sunday. I drove there and back (140 miles) and 5 track sessions (4 25 minutes, 1 35 minutes). It's a pretty fast track so I am in VTEC for 90% of the time. I used 1 whole quart of AMSOIL. Just a few events ago I could go a whole weekend and only use 1 quart.
Anyway, I do actually have a point: next summer I want to freshen up the motor. is this something I can do myself (I'm pretty handy), or is it something I have to send the motor off to a shop for?
It's a B18C5 with sleeves and oversized pistons (2.0L), and a stage 4 DPR head. I was thinking new rings and valve stem seals, plus new crank and rod bearings ought to do it, no?
Just curious: what do you guys do for motor rebuilds? DIY or send to a shop?
Thanks

Get yourself a factory service manual and read it. That will give you a good feel for weather or not you are able to rebuild the motor.
I would highly recommend doing it yourself. You will feel better about it and you will know its done right without shortcuts.

I sent my block to a shop for rebuild. I did the math to see how much it would cost to do it myself after I bought all of the necessary tools and such. I also thought about how often/little I would use the newly purchased tools (bore guage, ring filer, calipers, micrometers, stretch gauges, etc.).
In the end, it was only $200-300 more to have a professional do the rebuild, so I sent it out. However I did freshen up the head and rebuild the tranny myself. I only had the block rebuilt and did final motor assembly myself.
