Vtec Del Sol mpg
I have a 95 del sol, the vtec model and it's only getting at best 30 mpg all highway, and I try to not let the vtec kick in. I only ask because I know someone else with a 95 del sol non-vtec and they get around 40 mpg. Anyone know of anything that could cause this discrepency? The car has brand new tires on it (actually put on yesterday) and the oil was changed yesterday as well.
Thanks
Thanks
What is the engine? Is it the D16z6, or the B16 like a real Del Sol VTEC? That would probably account for the decrease in MPG.
Myself, I've got the D15B VTEC in my hatch and I get around 30-35 depending on whether it's city or highway.

The tires are inflated properly, they seriously have less than 500 miles on them and after bottoming out earlier on the highway (in another thread) I checked the pressure to make sure I didn't mess the tire up and the pressure was fine. I also cleaned the air filter with K&N filter cleaner and the car only has 70k original miles on it but perhaps a tune-up could help, but I'm not sure if it would make a huge difference for such low miles?
then you dont have a del sol vtec, you have a del sol si. he has a del sol s.
Do you have any performance parts, i.e. I/H/E? small things like these can lead to lower mpg.

You must drive like you're a Nascar racer. Do you hit vtec alot? At what RPM do you normally shift at?
And don't describe you Sol as a Del Sol VTEC. That is a specific model and instantly tells guys who know Hondas that you have a B16 in it and then yeah, 30 mpg is good.

Yeah, the B16 is small, but it has a close ratio transmission, with the exception of the final drive, it's the same as an integra Type R's transmission.
Your friend will get high 30's, low 40's with his Del Sol S (D15B7).
You on the other hand, will thrive in towns because you can shift sooner due to the close ratios, and you will suffer a bit on the highway due to how high the final drive is plus the head isn't designed for economy like it is on other cars with similar close ratios transmissions, like Jettas (which have a very closed off head).
Also, note, the Del Sol is a very heavy car, weighs as much as my EX Coupe (EJ8) which is the second heaviest car (next to the EM1 ('99/'00 Si)). So the Del Sols aren't light to begin with.
Compare the fact that your motor isn't meant for economy, it's a heavy car, and due to the head vs the transmision, it suffers on the highway, you'll get about as good gas mileage as a '99/'00 Si. Which is about 33 on the highway, 28 around town (I'm just kinda estimating numbers here in your area). So if you're getting low 30's your fine.
I only get 36mpg with my D16Y8 which is running at 100% condition doing 77MPH on the highway with the AC on.
EDIT:
Do what the guy in the first post said - do a basic tune up (plugs, wires, rotor, cap, oil, oil filter, air filter, can of seafoam in the gas tank, some fuel injector cleaner), and then take it from there.
Your gas mileage is a BIT below what it should be. You're not gonna pump much more out of it. Drive with a lighter foot.

In the OP I stated that I don't let the vtec kick in and I bought the car primarily for putting 600 miles a week on, instead of putting it on either of my crxs.
The engine confusion was due to me being involved with crxs for so long. In a crx an Si has the d16a6 w/ the Si transmission. So I naturally thought that the s model was a non-si trans with a d16a6 or d15b or w/e, Si model with the same engine but an Si transmission, and not knowing that Del Sol was sold with a b16 in it I assumed seeing "vtec" on the head was all that meant.
Edit:
There's nothing performance-wise done to the car. The previous owner chopped the stock intake off about a foot from the intake manifold and slapped an air filter on it, but that's about all.
