So i'm still trying to figure out what to swap into my humble LS.

I have an obd1 car and am looking for an easy california legal swap.

I notice that a used USDM swap and a JDM b18c GSR swap are roughly the same price.
However the b18c1 is rated at 170hp and b18c is rated at 180hp.

What's the difference in motors? ECU programming? smog equipment?
I'm wondering if i get one of these and drop it in my engine bay, using a USDM ECU, and all the smog equipment, if i'll keep that extra 10 horses.

any ideas?

 

as far as i know it has a bit more compression and i think the exhaust manifold has a 2.5' collector. anyway i wouldnt buy a new swap for 10hp,if you actually get that. if your gonna swap get a integra or civic type r motor. get a obd-1 to 2 jumper harness and use the ecu that comes with it and use all appropriate smog equipment for obd-2. im not familiar with the smog or bar thing but you can go up with obd program and not down right?
if your current motor is healthy get some smog legal bolt on's and get it tuned. just switch ecu to stock for bar. that should get you a few more power.

You can go upwards in obd, but i would rather not - more crap to slow your car down with. Japanese motors are all good with running at OBD1 but i am almost certain i can't run a JDM ECU and get away with it..

the power difference between my motor would technically be 25hp for the b18c1 and 35hp for the JDM b18c.. hence why i'd rather have the JDM motor.

 

itr swap isn't worth it. get a gsr. usdm or jdm doesn't really matter much.

 

it's not an ITR swap, it's a B18C GSR swap.

Im not 100%, but I think its mainly compression (different pistons), and different maps in the ECU. I dont believe the JDM engines run through 2 cats (on the obd2 years).

 

that would make sense. OBD2 era JDM motors lack some other california/USA - required stuff too. crankshaft fluctation sensors comes to mind.

i take it one would have to run the JDM ECU ( if possible.. ?? ) or hondata... but that just adds to the price.

this is merely speculation.....but i believe because japan has higher octane gas with the slight increase in compression, that would yield your 10hp.......now if you bring that motor over here use our octane gas and ECU, you have yourself a usdm gsr motor with what feels like the same power. I had a jdm b16 and drove a usdm b16....both felt the same to me. May as well pay for the cheaper one in my eyes. Good luck

Yeah well It's been shut down for a while and I can't take care of my ref ticket. With Cali's budget.. I don't think state REF will ever come back alive and I hope It doesn't.

 

I hope it doesn't come back either. But i'm certain it will. We have way too many greenies around here ( myself kind of included.. don't hate )

Oh god, imagine the swaps. Imagine the forced induction madness. It would be like mad max.
I'd stick a JDM euro-r whatever H22 in there and call it a day.

the pump gas difference on the B18C makes sense.

i lived in spokane washingon.. my house location was within the few miles of the smog line or some bs.. so if i lived 5 miles closer to idaho i wouldnt have had to smog my car...

also, all they did was put the sniffer in the tail pipe, put the car on the dyno, and plug something into the cigarette lighter... not one pop of the hood or anything bad ***

only way to tell is get one stock vs stock.. stock usdm motor stock intake stock usdm header stock usdm ecu, then get a jdm motor, stock jdm header, stock jdm intake, stock jdm exhaust, stock jdm ecu...

that would honestly be the only way to tell.... then still there could be differences on the condition of the motor how many miles, compression test, leakdown its just 10 crank hp doesnt really mean **** to me to spend more money on... whats 10 chp like 3whp??? lol worth the extra money? not really

 

well actually yesterday i just discovered that my car has a shitload of rust underneath. If any rear brake work was required i'd have to replace the entire assembly.. the rust is to the point where it is bubbly.. worst i've seen. the rear body welds are starting to rust off as well. No engine swap for this car!! but i'll probably put a final drive in the B18 transmission and take the engine + trans over to another car ( possibly an EK and use the transmission for a H2B Swap ) when this one literally falls apart in a couple years.

Just to help clear up where some of the horsepower comes from:

JDM SiR-G (not GSR) motors are rated in ps (German: Pferdestärke = horse strength) and not horse-power. 180ps is really equal to 177hp (1HP = 1.01PS). So that explains 3 of the 10 extra hp. The other 7 must come form the bump in compression as well as some tuning, the shorter JDM catalytic converter, and maybe exhaust differences we don't know about.
