Default Stock R running rich

Hi , posting for a friend. He has a stock type r with about 120k on it. The car gets normal mpg , but it blows alot of black smoke at vtec .. to the point where his rear bumper has alot of deposits. The car is all stock though , from intake to exhaust , stock ecu , stock fuel system .. what can be causing this ? All ignition parts changed already , also valve adjustment done. Timing marks line up , and ignition timing is at 14 degree .. any ideas will be appreciated

Check the plugs, they will tell the story.

The life lesson here is that if we encourage him to search for his/her answers, they will be able to find the answers more quickly (and without asking) in the future. "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." -Chinese Proverb

Ignorance is bliss. A guy I went to high school with is serving 5 years for vehicular manslaughter. He was street racing and the other driver struck a car killing 5 people.

Ya im just saying all you had to say was check plugs...u didnt have to jump all over his dic.k and say search. ya he should search but dont it would have been easier just to say check plugs like the guy under you post did.

No... I mean check them after you have done all that. Make sure the plugs look like they are rich (heavy in gas smell and usually darker in color)

Make sure not to confuse the "rich" black smoke as oil burning.

What other mods does the car have? Any ECU or tuning, or VAFC?

I agree though, this has been covered many of times and many other suggestions can be found by searching. There are several reasons you could be running rich.

i meant no harm in saying search because i am also running rich. I have found many solutions to solving this, and many of the older threads already have the information you need. this is the latest topic i've searched to be honest.

just pulled my 2 weeks old spark plugs out . 2 still looked new , and 2 were getting pretty black. So it seems like 2 cylinders are running rich. The car has no CEL and i dont think its leaky injector because the car still gets decent mpg . Any suggestions ? btw , car failed smog barely at HC but everything else was ok. Car passed after spark plug changed .. but HC was still pretty high

i seriously doubt 2 will be running rich and 2 will be perfect because fuel, to me it sounds like oil consumption which is a common problem with these motors

take really good close up pics of the plugs and post them, also while your at it do a compression/leak down test on the motor

well i mean the car failed smog due to HC ( unburned fuel ) .. and barely passed after changing spark plugs . Can burning oil cause that ? .. the spark plugs are black .. its DRY and very THICK ..i ll try to get some pics posted later .. Car blows out BLACK smoke during vtec , not blue smoke .. but i ll get him to do a compression check and possibly a leakdown ..
