timing belt tensioner

Default timing belt tensioner

k this might be a stupid question but i have need to figure it out regaurdless so here is it. if my timig belt wont tighten up enough then will a new one tighten it up or what cause when i look at what im buying it doesnt seem like replacing that roller would make the timin belt tighten. i knwo its probably stupid question but could any one tell me

It really depends. Some engines have an automatic tensioner and some have a manual. Both my engine and the prelude engine had manual ones. What our instructions said to do was to loosen the tensioners, turn the crank pulley counter-clockwise 3 to 5 teeth, and then immediately tighten again. The fact that you are moving the crank will automatically tighten the belt, then that's why you then tighten the tensioner.

The reason to replace the tensioner is because they can go bad, meaning, the bearing itself. They go bad when the bearing locks up and causes the belt to rub against it and eventually snap. Unless you have an automatic tensioner, getting a new manual one won't solve the "not tightening" issue. Remember though that the belt will be a little looser on one side than the other. NEVER rotate the engine the oposite way or the slack on the belt will reverse and you may jump teeth.

Glad I could help

I've done this job twice so I know it can be frustrating if something's messed up and have to tear everything down again. That happened to us on the H23 prelude since we rushed and only replaced belts and ignored everything else.

Changing the tensioner is part of the "timing belt kit" - which consists of timing belt, water pump, and tensioner. You should do all 3 at once.

hey i have a similar problem but i think mine timing belt may be alittle tooo tight or my water pump is going bad cause my car is making this hissing sound when i drive it its coming from that region of the motor... i have a b16 motor so would the tensioner be different??
