If you get 17 short flashes without pause then yes, it is a code 17.
Check the speedo cable. If the speedometer is not working, then you'll get that code.

yea if your MPH on the cluster dont move or bounce around then its your speedo cable. pin could have slipped out or their might not be one or the cable is just old and gave out.if so its located on the tranny and very easy to fix.
I had this same problem. It's a intermittent code on my car. I removed the hazard fuse and cleared the code and haven't seen it since. If it's not the cable it's probably the speedometer assembly. Your english is better than Mexicans that live here.

I have a question, How can I easily remove the sensor from the tranny? I have an 88 Crx and It seems almost impossible to remove it. My speedometer stopped working so I checked behind the cluster to see if it was still connected and it was. So I'm thinking that maybe my sensor is bad? Or wire is broken? I want to remove it but I can't quite get my hands to it... Any ideas?
i dont have any pics, but the speedo cable goes into the top of the vss, there is a little boot on it pull the boot up and remove the little horse shoe shaped clip. pull the cable out, give it a little tug and see if the cable is broken. if not there is a little 10mm bolt that holds the vzz in the trans remove that, and carfully twist the base of the vss back and forth with a upward motion.
any more questions please ask ok.
p.s its not really a sensor so to speak, its really a gear that rides on the differential

do I have to unbolt anything before pulling the wire up? <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by sleepingciv »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">i dont have any pics, but the speedo cable goes into the top of the vss, there is a little boot on it pull the boot up and remove the little horse shoe shaped clip. pull the cable out, give it a little tug and see if the cable is broken. if not there is a little 10mm bolt that holds the vzz in the trans remove that, and carfully twist the base of the vss back and forth with a upward motion.

At the transmission, pull the inside completely out of the housing:

The entire inner cable should be 34 3/4" long..
If not,it is broken..
If the cable is in one piece,Grease it up and stick it back in the housing:

The green line should be inserted all the way to where the slot is:

It is then held in place with the clip which is usually found inside the rubber cover:

You may have to turn the cable until it lines up with the drive in the sensor...
If you are trying to remove the speedo gear drive:
If you have access to compressed air,use a blower nozzle
to blow out any sand/debris around the top where it goes into the case.
Soak the area liberally with a penetrating oil like PB Blaster..
Lock a small pair of vise grips around the lower larger portain of the sensor
And then work the sensor from side to side to break the seal of the internal o-ring
After the seal is broken,it should pull right out...
