Stock hood vs cf hood
I was just wondering how much weight i could save by switching to a cf hood, and cf trunk compared to stock..i have a 92 da...has anyone ever weighed the two? Thanks
you wil def shave some pounds, but when you put it into contrast, is it really worth spending $350+ for shaving 10-12 pounds at most. spend that money else where. like some new tires.
you're right but removing weight from the front is like an ultimate challenge. I understand why people swap out their hoods and i think about it from time to time too, swapping out a hood is one of the few things that actually has an affect and doesn't remove anything critical from the front of the car.
The only distinct negative I can associate with a CF hood is it can turn your car into a thief magnet.
The exact weight savings depends on the quality and manufacturer of the hood. I've picked up CF hoods that weigh in at 15 lbs and I've picked up CF hoods that can't be less than 25, and they were both OEM style and for the same application.
As Neptronix mentioned, weight off the front is often viewed as a critical issue. Not only is it weight off the car, but it also improves the front to rear weight ratio, which is often disproportionately skewed due to the extreme ease of removing weight from the back.

why spent like 400 bucks on a cf hood that is only gonna safe 15 pounds?,****,you want a weight reduction take the spare tire out and lose like 20 pounds, just be careful where you drive.

i totally agree with both neptronix and kendall, i guess it all comes down to personal preference, if you wanna go for aesthetics and improve the front to rear weight ratio, more power to you. but personally i would rather spend the money on some upgraded rotors and pads or new LCA's.
well reduced weight is good for performance *and* handling - one reason why i'm hesitant to start adding things rather than just start removing them ;p.
yes, cf hoods turn your car into a theif magnet, but i would definetely paint mine.
a cf hood is where you go once you've done everything else.
me, i've taken a lot of weight out of the back. Not sure if there is any noticeable reduction in handling due to that, but road noise prevents me from stripping the rear further and i'm more interested in taking things off from under the hood, top end weight being the most important.

The reason im looking to do this is, most of the things listed i already have my car is fully built boosted, and I already have taken alot of stuff out, I race the car at the track alot and im trying to shave more weight..
I park the car in my garage out in the farm country in pa, i dont really have to worry about theft..Thats why im thinking about a cf hood and trunck and possibly putting tinted lexan windows in the hatch and rear windows..
What do your da's weigh. i want to get mine to 2400lbs with me in it.

If your gonna paint your cf hood, why not just get a fiberglass hood instead. Cheaper and probably lighter.

Carbon Fiber offers a level of durability that fiberglass simply can't. Even a fiberglass hood with two wet laid layers of carbon is significantly more durable than straight fiberglass.
Ive had a Seibon cf hood on my gsr for 2 years now, and have had one on my old LS for 4 years before that, and i can be the one to tell you that it doesnt make much of a difference in weight savings...
Seibon is known to be one of the top companies for cf products, and they do not lack attention to detail, fitment and performance, however, the weight saving from switching from an OEM hood to a Seibon is not worth it.
It does add to the appearance of the car, along attracting a lot of unwanted attention.
It probably saves you about a good 20 or so lbs. My seibon weighs about 14 lbs i think, stock being someone in the mid 30s.
Most people get it strictly for look or to create some color contrast on light colored cars, not so much to shave off 20 lbs.

thanks for the input.
I lifted the hood of a miata the other day, it was like 3 pounds or something, crazy. And sadly my civic hood was lighter..
.. oh well, at least we don't have american car hoods.
