Cutting the hood skleton.
Has anyone donw this before? and How much weight can you save? I'm thinking of doing this, because If I get a CF hood. the stock hood just going to sit there. If it weights the same after I cut it, I don't need to buy the CF hood. I don't care about looks. TIA

I've seen it done on nasa enduro and world challenge cars, where cf hoods are illegal.
At one world challenge race, a bmw had to pit because one of the hood pins came loose so that his crew could re-pin the hood.
I guess it would not go back on right, so the guy hit it with his fist to drive it down and the hood crumpled like tinfoil.
I really think it save a good amount of weight over the front of the car.
I'm thinking about doing it on my oem ef9 hood since i have a cf one already.

It will definitely save you a lot of weight but your hood will be extremely flimsy and will want to bend up as the wind runs into the front of your car and over the hood.
They actually did this to a Sentra road race project car in Sport Compact magazine. The hood was bending up so much at the front edges that it was creating a lot of drag. They ended up having to tape the front of the hood in addition to the hood pins to keep the air from blowing under the hood and causing it to create drag.
Just go CF unless it is soley a race vehicle and you don't mind taping the hood. Not to mention it was an extreme pain in the *** according to the Spo Com article because there are so may spot welds that have to be cut and popped off. They said the hood looked like **** when it was done and only shaved like 14 pounds.

One of the biggest problems HONDAs have with the skeleton cut out is the hood will wabble in the wind and smack against your engine. It gets very loud and very annoying quite quickly.
If you don't want to spend the money on a CF hood, get a fiberglass hood.

I did this on my CRX so my hood would clear the valvecover of my B18c.
The hood becomes very flimsy - but does not flop in the wind or anything as long as you leave the outer rib around the edges. Just don't let anyone lean on it.
The weight savings were minimal. But might be worth it for the 5 minutes of work it takes...

Decent CF hoods are not that expensive anymore.
I looked into getting a FG hood myself. When i added it all up, the CF hood was actually cheaper (shipped) than any of the fiberglass ones i found. Go figure...

I did it to a old hood. I was VERY dissapointed, it
didnt save much weight at all. I left the out side
rim around the hood, and just cut the center stuff
out.
