Default Burning oil after rebuild

I got my head rebuilt on my GSR (swapped into CRX) and put it on a block that i had purchased off of a guy on HT. The cylinder walls looked great, so i don't suspect leaking rings, but i'm definitely blowing smoke. Car has sat for about a year and i just put in a new fuel tank and pump assembly. It seems to run OK, just blowing smoke. I haven't had it running long enough to know what "normal" would be for engine sound/what to expect. What could the possibilities be? I'm not sure of the mileage on the block.

Blue, which is why i suspect it being oil, my old Altima blew smoke like that.

i think you might have gotten screwed on you block there...run a compression test

yeah that's what im thinking, the pan was oil tapped for turbo and i didn't realize it when i picked it up. I wish i had the guys number but there's nothing i can do now, a year+ later. I'll see about getting my hands on a compression tester.

Start with a compression check, if all cylinders have good numbers and less than 3% difference then look into a leakdown test. You can tell a lot from just these two tests and they are simple to do.

If they both check out ok then you may want to check valve seals.

i finally got a chance to pick up a compression tester and test it. The compression looks within spec on all cylinders, 3 is a bit low, but not at the "bottom level" that's within the specs. I'm still burning oil like a MF, a blue ploom out the exhaust, and my plugs are all black when i take em out. Aren't valve seals normally replaced with a rebuild?

reupping this, it didnt previously burn oil this bad, it was previously burning lots of gas (reason why i changed the fuel pump) so im trying to figure out where it's all getting in and why. I just checked inside the IM and noticed theres some oil sitting in there, not a lot, but enough to make e few small puddles. Anyone have any ideas? I'd rather not take it apart and rebuild if i don't have to

measure piston to wall clearance and see if it's even possible to re-ring. some worn out thrashed on motors will get the piston to wall up to .008 or .009, reringing is a waste of money if there is that much wear on the pistons and walls...ususally pistons.

valve seals are toast.. thats what blue smoke usually indicates.

I'm not disagreeing with you that it could be the valve seals, but blue smoke means that you are burning oil. It doesn' tell you where it's coming from.

guides are an often overlooked place that causes this issue. a leakdown test is the next step i would take. if the motor passes strongly it would confirm seals or guides.
