burning oil
I notice that after heavy boosting I get a whiff for a few seconds of burning oil. It happened with my last turbo and my brand new one. No smoke from the exhaust.
Is this typical?

Damn, I was about to start the very same thread. Here is my problem:
Blowing good amount of blue smoke after warmup and, well pretty much any time after that.
Just did a leakdown and compression. Had less than 5% leakdown and compression was an average of 175 across the board.
Dropped the downpipe and intake and inspected for oil--none found.
Replaced PCV.
The only thing I can figure is that the valve seals/guides are the culprit. Either that or the oil log thing on the back of the block.
Anyone have any suggestions??

There is a PCV valve in a(black box, I think its an oil vent) at the back of the block, mine was leaking oil down on the exhaust and everytime I did a power run, it would leak and cause a lot of smoke, it filled the car with smoke sometimes. just change the O ring and check the hoses to and from that same vent.
I boost anywhere from 6-10psi. I smell it after any good run no matter how much boost but more with more boost. I have no oil in my breather line going to my intake. I have a new pcv valve. I know there is always a little oil in that. I have a catch can I was going to put in line before the pcv valve goes to the intake manifold. My compression is very good - 210-210-210-210
I have 75,000miles on the car - stock engine.

I have this same problem.. but my problem I'm sure stems from the fact that I
have a small leak on my oil return line that hits the DP..
I guess also that some oil smells can come out from the valvecover breather.

I have the same problems with my car. I've had my Drag for over 2.5 years and i've put over 40K miles on the turbo alone (car, Teg RS B18B, has a total of 103K miles). I smell oil following hard driving/boosting. Compression reads good (190+). The problem was there since day one of the install. Checks show no oil in intercooler/piping, everything checks out okay. My guess is, a small amt of oil passing the turbine seals and entering the turbine/exhaust and getting burnt.
cool. glad i'm not the only one. I hope its nothing. I'm running mobile1 5w-30. Perhaps some of it does slip past the turbo seals. I guess thats ok. that should not harm the turbo and is best for the engine? When i'm idling and I put my nose in my exhaust pipe, i don't smell any oil just fuel.
Hmm, I think I definetly have a valve seal problem then. My **** smokes a hellofalot....guess its time to have some headwork done. Damn, p&p, springs, retainers, valves, guides--here i come.
The valve stem seals would cause oil burning. I had a bad valve stem seal in my head and it ate up 1.5 quarts of oil a week w/ the same symtoms as everyone said. How did i know it was the valve stem seal ? Well when I took my head apart, all the seals were a boitch to take out EXCEPT for one seal which came out with ease.
Yeah, it's possible valve stem seals would cause oil burning. However, i started smelling oil just after i installed the turbo (day one). It has stayed the same since then. I've been running castrol syntec 5W50 since 40K turbo-miles ago.
In short, it's highly unlikely (in my case, at least) that valve stem seals are the cause of my oil burning.

Just what I was looking to hear. Weird, Im using about the same amount of oil.Anyone know of any good sites on a how-to on replacing the seals? Which seals to go with, factory? Should I do the guides, or are they one in the same? Should I do springs and retainers too--since im in there? And which tools to buy-- Snap-on preferred!
