Real Live Tech Thread: Clutch woes after install
I had installed a ACT AR1-XTSS Clutch and Prolite flywheel. The problem is the clutch doesn't disengage, even if the pedal is full depressed. The install was completed at a Honda dealership. I had them install this when they replced the 3rd gear set. I also had them install the 5.06 Final drive too.
Has anyone else installed this combination?
2007 Civic Si Sedan
The pedal does return, it's fully functional, the lines were bled, . The clutch won't disengage and you can't shift normally. You have to force it into gear at stops and when shifting thru the gears you can't just put into gear without it grinding, you have to time it.

The clutch is engaged, the engine would rev freely and wouldn't go anywhere while in gear if it wasn't. It won't disengage.
It takes force to put it into and pull out of gear, and at stop lights if its in 1st and you hold the clutch and brake pedal to the floor the car begins to shake as if its trying to move. Also if you have it in 1st gear from a dead stop the car will creep forward despite the pedal being fully depressed.

Where did you get the clutch Kidnkorner?
I checked ACTs website and it said they have no parts available for 06+ civics. I see corsport has the prolite flywheel for 06+ but when I check ACT site for the part number it comes up as an RSX part. There are lots of 02-06 RSX / 02-05 Civic SI ACT parts, and some retailers online claiming those parts will work for 02-07 civics. I didn't see any specific parts for our cars. I'm wondering if there were changes to the transmission that make the RSX and old SI clutch and flywheel parts incompatible with the 06+ SI. You'd think if they did actually fit/work with our cars that ACT would be marketing them that way.
I hope this isn't the cause of your problem, but it seemed strange to me that I couldn't find any actual ACT parts specifically for our cars.

read his thread on 8th. Honda is happy to look at it. They even said they'd put the stock parts back, but if it fixed the problem he'd have to pay the labor (cause that would mean the aftermarket parts were at fault for the problem). They still warranty their labor on the job, as far as I know, so if replacing with stock parts doesn't work then yes it's the dealer's responsibility to fix it. The transmission part of the warranty may be void but "definitely voids your warranty" might give some people the wrong idea about the situation and the way warranties work in general.

i meant voids his powertrain warranty. trans. specifically. aftermarket clutch/flywheel and aftermarket final gear.
if the problem lies with what was mentioned above about the clutch kit being for an ep3, why would they warranty any of it? its not like honda got a hold of these parts for him. he wont get his labor $ back. the techs still put the time in.(even though initially it was tsb for 3rd)
dont get me wrong. i hope everything works out for the op. i just wouldnt expect honda to do much for me if it is the wrong clutch kit. i sure wouldnt expect the work comp'd over warranty.

All work consists of two things: parts & labor.
If the parts caused the problem, then yes the OP is SOL. He would have to pay for the labor to fix the issue

If something was installed incorrectly, that would be a problem with labor. He paid for the hours of labor to install the clutch, etc. beyond what was covered by the warranty work (3rd gear TSB). They still warranty their labor, if indeed it was installer error but like the service director told him, if it's the parts he'll owe for additional labor.

Technically from LSD Motorsports, but I bought it as a dealer. I own http://www.allversionperformance.com
ACT has already been called by LSD. ACT said it was compatiable. I will have to see what's going on. These parts listed are for RSX-S

backwards clutch disk is a possibility, too bad there's no easy way to check

That is what I was thinking, the clutch plate was put is backwards. That or the pressure plate springs are too tall or it has a broken spring. I have never seen a Honda clutch apart so I don't know if they even use throw-out bearings anymore, but I had a similar issue in a performance VW bug I built. In that case I installed the throw-out bearing backwards. Once car was in gear, I could not get it out.
Low and behold there is an adjustment for the pedal assembly. I looked but unless you have the right angle you can't see the 12mm bolt. Anyway the rod adjustment solved the issue. you have to loosen the bolt and turn the rod clockwise.

It's a shock because the dealer said there was no adjustment. I looked but unless you get at a good angle you can't see that bolt. Turning the rod 2mm at a time was a biznatch. I finally just removed the pedal assembly, it was taking forever. While I had it off there were 2 huge spacers/washers welded on the back side, i cut them in half with my cut off wheel and grinded of the burs to bring the pedal assembly closer to the fire wall. I didn't think to take a pic until after I was done. I will work on getting one.
K20A.org suggested i put a washer between throwout arm pivot ball stud and the clutch case

So if you are putting this combo on I suggest doing the washer trick, it seems a whole lot easier. In my case what I did was cheaper considering I'd have to pay to drop the transmission.
Special thanks goes out to superslowSI

Congrats on solving this issue. I am taking my SI into Dynospot Racing the week after next for a new clutch. I am having a clutch installed that will handle up to 215 torque. I want everything ready for when I can increase the boost.
Anyway, my mechanics are selecting the right clutch assembly and flywheel for my application. I will let them know about this adjustment bolt.
Btw, where exactly on the vehicle was the pedal adjustment bolt, up under the dash?
Thanks

Instead of adjusting that rod and bolt I would do the washer. It's simpler and quicker.

im having the same problem... been working on it for 3 weeks and cant figure it out...
after i installed an act prolite flywheel (600130), and an Exedy stage1 racing clutch kit (08805) i havent been able to get the clutch to fully disengage...
ive tried adjusting the rod behind the clutch pedal, i replaced the master and slave cylinders, ive bled the lines more times than i can count.... i even jammed a spacer between the slave cylinder rod and the throwout arm to try to force it out farther.... nothing has helped...
at this point it seems like it has to be something with the flywheel or clutch... i think im gonna try putting the old pressure plate back on but i really dont want to take the tranny back off if i dont have to... any ideas?

in case anyone was wondering.... it was as simple as not having enough grease on the transmission axle... i feel like an idiot. oh well now i know
