It's refered to often as the black canister or breather box. Basically it's a type of catch can, and I believe it's baffled. If you remove it, you will need to plug all the hoses that run to it, but no harm if removed. Just put it back for smog, otherwise they wont pass you.

CHARCOAL CANISTER
Definition: A storage device in the evaporative emissions control system. It is a small cylindrical or rectangular container that contains activated charcoal particles. The charcoal traps gasoline vapors from the fuel tank (and carburetor on older vehicles). Later, the vapors are purged and drawn into the engine when the vehicle is being driven

if i was you i would keep it hooked up if you do unhook it you will smell gas vapors all the time

not if you plug everything that it connects to.

The hard line runs back to the fuel tank.

I personally would also keep it in place.

just throwing this out there dont know if anyone has done it or if its worth it...

how about relocating it? this way you can have your clean engine bay but also have it functioning well too
