Its an 96 ls. im trying to clean up the engine bay and came across this. i never really noticed it until i looked at it. A friend of mine told me he took his out with no problems. is it safe to take out. wat does it do??

the hose runs to here, but there is nothing actually going into the mnifold its just screwed on there.

It's refered to often as the black canister or breather box. Basically it's a type of catch can, and I believe it's baffled. If you remove it, you will need to plug all the hoses that run to it, but no harm if removed. Just put it back for smog, otherwise they wont pass you.

CHARCOAL CANISTER
Definition: A storage device in the evaporative emissions control system. It is a small cylindrical or rectangular container that contains activated charcoal particles. The charcoal traps gasoline vapors from the fuel tank (and carburetor on older vehicles). Later, the vapors are purged and drawn into the engine when the vehicle is being driven
if i was you i would keep it hooked up if you do unhook it you will smell gas vapors all the time

how about relocating it? this way you can have your clean engine bay but also have it functioning well too
