S2000 shutting off while driving
I have searched, but please hear me out.
I own a 2001 Honda S2000, and just three days ago it started shutting itself off while I was driving. Keep in mind, the temperature has been well over 90 degrees the past couple weeks here. Anyway, so just cruising around town, all the sudden the RPMs slowly go down, down, down. Pressing on the gas does absolutely nothing. Then finally when the RPM's reach zero, the car shuts off and the entire gauge cluster lights up. The car has never had any issues. Carfax history report is clean. No CELs, no leaks, nothing. When I turn the key, the fuel pump can be heard. And when I try to start the car (after it dies) it won't. If I let the car sit for 25-30 minutes, then it usually will start back up. And I can smell fuel, so it must be getting to the engine.
Searching lead me to some 97-99 Civics that had "ignition switch" issues. Could this be my problem? It's getting more and more frustrating because the Honda dealership claims they still don't know what is causing the car to do this. Any suggestions and/or help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

In the morning when the car is cold, it will start up fine. The car will only shut itself off once it has reached normal operating temps. The times it has shut down, I have either been at an intersection waiting for the light to go green, or driving along with traffic. It was definitely becoming dangerous, so I had to take it in.
does sound like something really simple like a sensor - that's exactly what they do - it's still telling the engine management that it's not warmed up yet, so it's adding too much gas (kinda like a choke). This also applies to re-starting the car as it still thinks it's cold, so adds too much gas. once the engine cools down enough, then it will work.
or ECU, but that's unlikely.

So you brought it into the dealer for diagnosis? if so, do you have the freeze frame data printout? from the symptoms, it sounds like a faulty "crank posistion sensor". i work on Mercedes...they display the same symptoms but also shuts off the fuel pump. what would happen is the sensor would get too hot then it would cause high resistance or "open loop". the ecu then do not know what posistion the crank is at and can not fire the coils/ injectors...etc.
anyways this is my guess. also, give the dealership a break. if its an intermittent problem, they have to duplicate it before they can properly diagnose it. you wouldnt like it if they start charging you to "guess".

So it could possibly be a dirty or faulty MAP sensor, or Crank position sensor? I appreciate the help guys. I know the dealership is only doing their job, but I am getting tired of hitching rides with people. Of all cars to have issues... an S2000. I guess it can happen to anything though. Oh well, tomorrow is day 5 at the dealership. Can't wait to see this bill.

So this "MAP whack"... Is this something that I will have to continually do over and over again, for the life of the car? Does the new zip-tie fix the problem with the MAP because of faulty wiring? The MAP whack seems like a temporary fix.
After searching many forums, this MAP sensor problem seems to exist on a lot of S2000's. The MAP whack to me (and many other people) is only a temporary fix. So here is my next question...
Will AEM ems eliminate the stock MAP sensor, and allow me to replace it with a different one? And possibly place the new MAP sensor in a different location?
It's an expensive fix, but I am more willing to drop $1600 right now on AEM, rather than have my car sit at the dealership, with no permanent fix in sight. Let me know your insight to AEM and the possibilities of ending this MAP sensor bullcrap.
