Fan switch or blower?

Here's my deal. The fan just stopped working one day. The AC compressor will still fire up, but the fan does not come on. Checked the fuse and all seems well. Narrowed it down with the Helms schematic to either the fan switch or the blower. Wondering if it is common for the fan switch to go out or would it probably be the blower?
I hate pulling the damn heater controls out for nothing if you guys think it would be the blower.
Next question. If it is the blower, do you get it at the dealer, or just find a used one? Not really looking forward to doing either one, but the less pulling apart of the dash the better.
thanks

i would check the fan motor first. you should be able to get to it after taking out the glove box. pull the plug on the motor and try giving it some power if it doesnt work i would say its the fan. you should be able to get the new motor from any parts store.

You guys are good. No where in the Helms did it talk about the blower motor resistor.....maybe I missed it though. Took the glove box out, unscrewed the resistor and sure enough, one of the coils was broken. Pedaled my bike down to Honda and had them rape me for $41 and now I have to wait two days.
OT, but damn the dealers rape you. The same part at Majestic was like $24. With the shipping and the processing fee, it was the same damn price. I just don't need more parts so it doesn't make sense to just mail order the single part.

pocket item could break the coils. Be careful Tyson.

Replaced that today, but no luck. It had a broken coil too so I thought that might have been the problem. Now I guess I have to do a little more work.

A fun (not so much) update to my story that I need to share.
Well after replacing the coil and still no blower coming on, I dove in a little deeper. Tested the blower motor connector. Got 12.XX volts, the line in is good. Plug it back in and jump the wire according to the Helms. The fan does not come on, so it has to be a bad fan. I think hold on as my alligator clip on the ground popped off, that may have caused a problem. Sure enough, the fuse blew. Replace the fuse. Jump the power wire and the fan turns on. Fan is good.
Now I start with the fan switch on the actual dash unit. I have to take that damn thing out to grab the plug and check the connections. (You guys know what a bitch that is if you have done that.) If you have a better way to remove the heater control unit please inform me. I have a spare fan switch from an old unit that was broken and I replaced. I disconnected the 6 prong connector and plugged it into the new (old) switch I had. Started the car, and slide the level to 4 and the fan came on. Sweet, bad fan switch.
I think to myself, let me try and plug it back into the one still mounted on the controller. Guess what it works now.
I removed the damn control panel and there was not a problem at all. I am guessing that MAYBE the plug was not pressed all the way in the first place.
Well it's fixed now, and I am a happy camper.
If any of you studs knows of a simple way to remove the heater controller please let me know.
Thanks for the help!

I guess my problem was I had no shade and only one beer that was done right when I blew the first fuse. I don't wish that hell on anyone.
My little 88 Si has 265K miles on the clock and has not let me down, so I guess it's OK she plays with my head every now and again.
I wonder what the dealer charges to replace the heater unit? I would guess maybe 4 to 5 hours minimum. What a pain.
