Default How does my car save more gas and runs better w/o the cat?

I recently removed the Catalytic from my car to try to save more gas and to drive better but a lot of mechanics have told me different. They say that with the Cat back I will save more gas but that without the cat it runs better.....is this true???

also if I get one of those high flow cat from ebay(that supposelly increase the H/P) would I still lose HP??

I drive a '94 civic DX, automatic...1.5L and I have a 2.5 inch pipe(exhaust pipe)....I also left the original muffler on the car..I just changed tube into a bigger one..

You're driving an automatic D series....no amount of bolt ons are going to make that car fun to drive, period. I seriously doubt you will notice a difference.

The small difference in MPG can be varied easily, depending on throttle position, wind speed, quality of fuel from fill up to fill up, air density and humidity... the list goes on.

This is like when people do something simple at the drag strip (side bolt exhaust) and they claim it either made the car slower or faster, even though their 60ft and traps are all over the place.

We can debate about the need for back pressure to make a car run properly. However, you are talking about MPG. The biggest factor on MPG is your right foot. You already know that. No amount of mod is really going to make a difference. Ok, I've gotten 1MPG better with a cat-back, but 9-10 times (tank average), I actually use more because of the cat-back.

My current car have an actual indicator that tells me the instant MPG. It's a electronic math calculation (like all systems) rather than an actual measurement of gas use. But still.....

In normal driving, I can +/- 2.5MPG just based on how I apply my right foot. It's a learning process, and very easy to go astray. And it's not driving slow or like a granny. It's about using the engine efficiently.

Bottom line, if you are asking about improving your MPG, don't mess with the cat, or spend $$$ on cat-back, etc, etc. Control your right foot.

You're an idiot, you are probably polluting 10000x more than with the cat, to gain 1 hp and 0.00001 MPG.

Seriously, I'm not a hippie and am not pushing green but when you remove a cat, unless it's a race car or something, (and especially on a stock civic) then you're a moron. Have some responsibility...do you dump oil on the street and let out freon in the atmosphere as well ?

just set the cruze take your foot out of the gas and don't do any heavy accelerating or braking. that will make more of a difference than a 30 dollar ebay part ever will

That's not always true. If the car has to go up and down a small hill while set at 50mph with automatic transmission, there is a good chance the engine will downshift, the revs will shot up, the engine will upshift, and the speed control will engine brake is back to the set speed. This will just shot your MPG out the door.
