My girlfriend just bought some power folding mirrors for a dc2 and i was just wondering what is the proper way of painting it????
i was told to do these processes....
1) sand the side mirrors untill the paint is gone and the mirrors is the bare gray plastic color
2) spray primer on the mirrors
3) sand it one more time
4) then finally spray the mirrors with the paint
is that the correct process???? do i need to get a can of clear coat also??? please help, asap.....

Ok, first of, are you using spray can paint or you using a gun to paint? Either way, the procedures are similar but with the spray gun, experience comes into play.
1.Prep the surface:
By this I mean, wash it to get debris or grime off, sand down or scuff the clear of the surface. You don't need to take all the paint off. Just by scuffing it or sanding with 600 you can accomplish that. The point is, new paint needs to bite into something and if is over clear or old paint not scuffed it wont stick. Only prime if you do any body work to cover imperfections.
2.Mask:
Mask anything you don't want paint on, everything. Please, use good tape, like 3m.
3.Clean:
Clean your substrate before painting it. Use surface prep or wax and grease remover. Autozone sell it so do the paint stores. Its like $18 or something for a gallon. Optional but recommended!
4.Spray:
Start spraying paint. Light coats, this is the most important of step of all. If you try to cover the whole thing on the first coat you most likely are going to run the paint.
5.Let it flash:
Its the time the paint manufacture suggest to wait before spraying another coat. Important? Hell yes.
6.Repeat 4 & 5 until you are satisfied with the finish result.
7.Clear it:
Same as step 4 & 5 but with clear, spay it a little closer than you'll do with paint. Its ok if you run it because runs can be sanded down and buffed.
Hope this will help. Any more ? feel free to pm me.
