Default taking off the tranny, anyone with a really good technique. please post your technique

first thing, i have taken out my tranny with the engine before.

i am trying to avoid taking out the whole thing again with a cherry picker.

is there a way i can take the tranny off without removing the whole engine again?

im trying to remove my oil pan but a small portion of the tranny is in the way.

so if you guys have a really good technique please post it up.

my current tools.

i have a cherry picker but ill have to reassemble it.
i have a floor jack. not being used at the moment. so i can place it anywhere.
i have two floor stands but they are being used at the moment, keeping the car up in the air.

if there is anything else i need to get i can probably get it.

i have an d16 with a 4wd tranny
91 ef civic

Once you remove the dust cover that goes over the back of the flywheel (where the tranny hangs down lower than your block) you should be able to get to the last 2 10MM bolts that hold the oil pan on. Sometimes, the dust cover is held on by those 2 bolts I think. Typically it has a 14mm, a 12 and 2 10's I believe.

i have to remove the tranny to get the oil pan out.

i cant slide the pan out because there are studs that come out of the engine that also hold up the pan. i really want to remove the studs and just use bolts from here on out.

Yea IndySporty is correct. Honda designed almost everythin to be easily servicable. i dont remember the sizes but that dust cover is keeping the oil pan in place. chances are is that there is oil build up and its hiding the bolts. by the way becarful when u remove that dust cover. u do not want to inhale any of the clutch dust. ull get sicker than hell

no dust cover on there anymore.

the tranny still needs to be push out of the way.

i guess ill still have to take the whole thing out again unless someone knows if i can angle it or something to get the tranny out of the way.

yeah, its a ton of work.

whats the method that i can implement to get the tranny off without removing the engine. i would prefer that if its possible.

there isnt too much room on the left to slide it to the left even i was to take the mount out. if i take the last two mounts that hold the tranny the engine would just drop on its own.

not too sure if its even possible.

really bad design for the oil pan to have some bolts and some studs with having the part of the lower tranny over the pan.

Put two nuts on the studs and tighten them together. Back them out and replace them with some hex cap machine screws!

Is it the 4wd that is the issue? I have never heard of transmission removal for oil pan removal.

And try to remove the oil pan studs like the guy above me said...would rather remove 10 10mm threaded rods than complete tranny removal

yes there is a part on the tranny on the 4wd that makes it hard to get to a few of the studs. i wont be able to put nuts there to do the stud removal. its in a very tight area.

the only way to get the pan out is to get the stud out first.

if the 4wd tranny is similar to a manual tranny, this write-up might work. Lengthy wite-up but detailed:

i saw the ending. all it says is to slide out the tranny after removal of all the extra stuff.
i dont think there is enough room to do that on my car. the left side seems like there is so little room. but ill try it if i need too.

I removed the oil pan off of an all wheel drive car before and had to remove the transfer case to do so. does your civic have a transfer case in the way? a clear picture can get us all thinking together.

I just confirmed it for ya..went to the garage and looked in my honda oem service manual....p 7-22:

1. remove the engine splash shield

2. drain engine oil

3. drain tranny oil

4. remove exhaust pipe A (downpipe)

5. disconnect the propeller shaft (drivesaft) at the tranny

6. remove the tranny splash shield

7.remove the transfer left side cover from the transfer case. (where the driveshaft connected to on the transfer case, remove those bolts)

Note: be careful not to damage the thrust shim and mating surface

8. remove the driven gear from the transfer case

9. remove the transfer case from the clutch housing

10.remove the clutch case cover

11. remove the oil pan by removing the bolts and nuts

pan is out!!

i dont have a service manual. i have looked on eaby but i am not sure which one is the best one that would cover everything.

could you take a pic of the transfer case?

i really need pics of these parts so i know if im thinking of the same thing you are.

"7.remove the transfer left side cover from the transfer case. (where the driveshaft connected to on the transfer case, remove those bolts)

i assume the tranfer case is the piece that is covering the oil pan i am speaking of?

my digital camera doesnt work correctly.

isnt there a gasket for the transfer case on yours? mine does and i am worried that there might be lose gears or other parts that i would not know how to put back together.. now to make sure i am understanding you, the transfer case is the little housing the just pretrudes over the oil pan, just about 1 foot or so. its kinda like why the hell is this piece over there, right?

my camera is all messed up, let me try again to take a pic anyways. just to clearify the part. my camer takes pics but when i go to transfer it to the cpu it wont recognize the files. who know why?? canon ... its an old digital camera.

if this works you are the MAN!
it just saved me hours and hours of extra labor.

well I only have a FWD civic but used to have an AWD dsm for many years, the awd is similar on most cars. it should be covering the oil pan that's why it must be removed. I used the honda website parts list as a reference below with a blowup of the transfer case:

if you look at where part # 4 (left side cover) was connected to, that is the transfer case pictured below:

STEP 7: is pictured here> transfer left side cover part # 4

http://www.hondapartsdeals.com...=6591

now while looking at the transfer case in that picture, the other side of it where you can't see (kind of where bolt # 24 is going into) there's another cartridge (step 8=remove driven gear) that needs to be removed as well. that other side of the transfer case is pictured below:

STEP 8 is pictured here > part # 1 (transfer cover)

http://www.hondapartsdeals.com...=6600

this is the manual that you want it's from the factory and covers a-z

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...61302

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...35554

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...59076

best investment you can make!

yeah that's exactly it...that's the left side cover....but first start by taking off the driveshaft connecting to the transfer case...then do the left side cover, be careful and try to carefully remove whatever comes out of it and place it somewhere so that the parts stay in order and helps you to remember which way they go back in.....

then do the driveshaft side,,there are 6 bolts that need to come out..same thing keep everything in order...

the transfer case can now be removed...4 bolts....transfer case is a half section piece flushed up against the transmission...

then remove the oil pan...

all of the o-rings need to be replaced including the gasket on the transfer case that faces the tranny...you need to apply liquid gasket to the tranny side first before putting the transfer case back on...

that's enough to get you started..

the install has a lot of tolerences and torque specs to follow...we'll get to that later...

there are free manuals online but I couldn't find the wagon specific version of it ....it may be out there if you look hard enough...here's a link to free manuals...:

https://www.spoonhonda.com/Sea...t=119

I downloaded the "civic manuals all" it works perfect but no info on 4wd wagons

yeah I'm in the wagon forums.."wagonwhirled"..you helped me out over the phone a few weeks ago regarding the ts-x200..lol

can you not just put a tack weld on the nut/stud so when it is unscrewed it removes the stud with it? maybe notch the pan to remove, you can then box it off and re-weld it so it can fit without removal of tranny for re-installation
