Default d16y8 oil pump .. do i need to port and shim it?

i just got my y8 tuned yesterday, the tuner set my timing to 15.5 w/ a gun, and i still have my stock y8 cam gear, not the obd1. and i have a p28 uberdata chipped ecu.

anyway, i was told after i got tuned of course, that the y8 oil pump sucks ***** at high rpms. my tuner set my rev limit to 7500 instead of the stock 7200. so now do am i going to need to be worrying everytime i rip on it if i'm giong to spin a bearing b/c my oil pressure is too low?

I don't know the specific problem with them, but the only block I've spun bearings on (in stock form) and had more spun bearing blocks given to me, is the Y8. Just to be safe, on the last Y8 we used a Z6 pump, pickup, and oil pan. That setup will leave you with no dipstick hole, but in my own mind, it's worth it.

well i'm down w/ modding my oil pump, but right now i currently have like this much extra oil here is the dipstick O------------O---|<----thats where the oil line is. should i drain it? i figured a little more was larite since oil has to go thru the feed lines and hte firewall line .. am i wrong about that?

I haven't done anything yet to my oil pump, not problems yet, I set my rev limit to 7500 also. I just make sure my oil is topped off every two weeks or something.

Been boosted for over a year now.

I have heard toga makes hi performance pump for the y8, haven't heard how reliable it is though

i dont know if this matters .. but i took it to like 7200 rpms and my oil pressure was at 80psi .. thats good, but i wonder if that means that my oil pump is pumping that out to my engine too?

Well the y8 oil pump flows less oil at a higher rpm and the z6 blocks have chamfered oil galleys opposed to the single unchamfered one on the y-series. Personally ruined a y7 with no mods just highway driving, dropped it down a gear to get the slow car moving and all way good for a sec until i went back to cruising the oil light flickered, went off, 5 min later my d-series sounded like a diesel lol.

same here.. i have seen SO MANY y8's with spun rod bearings come through my shop......and all were stock civics driven like grandmas. almost all of them were right around 150,000 miles.

I modded my Z6 pump to the max, every port is smooth, port between gear and bend was enlarged, main galley enlarged, inlet to filter area smoothed - everything. I get 15/10psi at idle (warm/HOT), and the usual at 50psi 3k. This is with ACL bearings/micropolished crank at loosest specs for the bearings.

Z6 pump FTW. Only thing better is the obd2 dohc vtec pump, if you catch my drift. BTW its under $125 to your door at hondapartsdeals.com. One is crush washer sealed, one uses tapered pipe plug. I'd have to dbl-check which is which. I do know the tapered plug pump has a larger outlet galley right after the gear.
