Default having problems setting timming

hey im having problems getting my timing right on my d16a6 i just put new valve seals in because it was smoking and it fixed that problem but now im having a problem getting the timing marks in the right place. when i put the timing belt back on i lined up the white mark on the crank pulley with the pointer on the timing belt cover and set the cam gear with the up arrow up and the two lines on the side level with the head. my problem is when i try to set my timing i can't get the 3 lines on the crank pulley to even come close to the pointer even if i have the distutor pushed all the way towards the firewall it's still like an inch away from the pointer. im pretty stumped about this situation. can anyone help me out and let me know what im doing wrong. when i drove the car i can really feel it straining and holding back the timing is definitly retard. please someone help so i can get my car back on the road

so when the up mark on the cam gear is up the up mark should line up with the pointer on the timing cover

I have a similar issue. I set the white mark that is about 1 inch behind the 3 marks. I pulled the valve cover to double check that my valves are cycling right. #1 with all four valve closed with # 3 intake open to let gas in since it's next to be fired off. The rotor button lined up with #1 on the distributor. tried to start and it tries real hard to start but just no quite there. I then pulled each spark plug and used a spare spark plug to check for spark. all 4 had good strong spark. tried to start and still just no quite there. i then pulled the fuel rail but left it hooked up to see if my injectors are opening and they all are, with nice relatively the same spray. put everything to together and still not firing off. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the timing with the crank/ cam is right. i'm getting spark and fuel. what else could it be? I've looked and looked online for answers and have tried everything i know but she still wont fire off. It's almost as if the fuel and spark timing is off but how could that bee true? is there an adjustment for the cam sensor? maybe it's not right sending the wrong info to the ecu and thus the timing for the injectors to open is off? thanks for any help

well, it only takes 3 things to run an engine. fuel, compression and spark.

your 2 for 3. do a compression test on all cyl, look up the specs for you specific engine.

after that, if your compression is good, the problem is electrical.

!IDEA!

Your sure your on the #1 cylinder at TDC? and the rotor is on #1 plug?

are your grounds nice and..... grounded?

Any Codes? CELs?

does main relay click when you go to start it?

do you hear your fuel pump prime before your start it?

i dunno. these are my ideas.

yes block/crankshaft is at white mark and # 1 @ TDC i pulled valve cover to double check that all 4 valves are closed to allow #1 to fire and pulled distributor also to double check that rotor is at #1 spark plug wire. everything there is right. yes fuel pump whines when i first turn the key. I have 0 ecu codes and no CEL. I also pulled each spark plug wire and used a spare spark plug to see if each was sparking. hey all were. Just to double check that i was geting fuel into the cylinders i took the fuel rail including the injectors off the IM and left everything hooked up and had a friend try to start he car to see with my own eyes that yes all 4 feul injectors open and spray fuel.

grounds i think so how many grounds are there and where. 1 from frame to valve cover is good. how many others are there?
