Honda Extended Warranty - Anybody do this?
I just bought a new Civic for my Wife, a 2008 (duh!) EX-L with Navi. The Honda people suggested an extended warranty for $700 to bring the 3/36 (and 5/60 for the engine) to 7/80. Additionally they also had an extended warranty of $1400 to bring the warranty to 8/120. Anybody here consider or do this????
I'm actually considering the $700 extension because my wife wants to keep the car for about 7 years, is not likely to drive more than the 80K in that timeframe and while the Honda engines might be bullit-proof, I suspect that repairing the navigation system in year 6 might be expensive. Looking for thoughts out there.

i got it...gives me peice of mind i guess. and when they factor it in to your loan payments you hardly notice it. and really....$700 aint ****
well when i got my si, i got the 100,000 mile warranty and it only raised my payments like 8 dollars i think. then i got gap insurance on top of that which was around 8 or 10 additional dollars. but all those things are worth it just for the sake of a few dollars extra a month. cuz i sure wouldnt want to be upside down without the gap

yea but if you're on honda-tech, theres a very good chance that it won't stay stock for its entire life of 100k.
Extended warranties in general are HIGHLY advised against by almost any 'consumer-report' caliber source. If they dealerships weren't so desperately trying to sell that, maybe i'd consider it but just the fact they're dying to sell you makes it sound like a scam. And yes i said and its been reported way too many times that extended warranties, in general, are a scam.
I'm glad I didn't get it and maybe if something did go wrong I'd be more then happy to actually get my hands dirty on MY car since thats what TRUE automotive enthusiasts do and not run to the dealership every time the smallest thing malfunctions.

I've been bouncing off the idea of the extended warranty myself. But as pr3d said, if your on this site, chances that your car will stay completely stock for 100k is rediculous. I'm going to have a hard enough time not doing anything within the first 36k with the "mod bug" thats living in me. But I spose, anything small that can be put on, taken off easily could be swapped out with stock.
But on another note, as far as an extended warranty, most people (or at least my reason) for buying a honda was the reliability factor. These cars last almost forever if you maintain them properly. So why would you need the extended warranty? Also, do you plan on keeping the car that long?

Extended warranty is basically insurance. They have to sell it to as many people as possible to be profitable otherwise they'll pay more than they collect. It's not a scam.
Those "consumer-report" sources generally don't know what the hell they're talking about when it comes to cars.
Another thing I bet most of you don't know is that extended warranty can be purchased at ANY TIME from ANY DEALER. If you do this, it won't be included in your monthly payements though. You can actually call as many dealers as you want and see who will give you the best price

Many good post on both sides.
I never buy extended warranty because I go on this principle. If the car is going to give me major trouble after 3/36, I will need to dump it. If your Honda is not already bulletproof by 3/36, chances are the problems will show up and lead to bigger problems. So it's like "cut your losses, early." If Honda is NOT going to be at least "trouble free" for 100K miles, maybe I should get a Toyota instead - you get my point.
But the reality is we never keep our cars as planned. I had originally want to run my Civic 250K. I only reached 110K before I sold it. More recently, we been trading it earlier and earlier. Something new, something better, and your needs change. Got kids?
This time we again plan to keep our cars for a long time. Who know with current and future gas prices. Just today, Ford said their future F150 truck will get 40MPG.
So what MPG will their cars be getting if the hogs can reach that high?

Some comments made so far:
- "yea but if you're on honda-tech, theres a very good chance that it won't stay stock for its entire life of 100k."
- "These cars last almost forever if you maintain them properly."
- "If Honda is NOT going to be at least "trouble free" for 100K miles, maybe I should get a Toyota instead - you get my point."
As it turns out, I did purchase the 7year/80K warranty, and here's why:
- Although I am an auto enthusiast (the reason I came to this site), the car is for my wife and she is less than enthusiastic about working on her car (and I have enough to worry about - both with cars and work).
- While I fully expect the large bits to hold together (like the engine & trans) with proper maintenance, the car I bought includes the navigation system - a component likely not designed by Honda directly. And like the Sony large screen TV that I bought which did need some warranty work on the electronics, the NVH environment that a car endures is a bit harsher than my family room. I imagine that the Navi system would be rather expensive for any repairs.

The only way I'd get an extended warranty is if it was a FACTORY extended warranty. No warranty sold at a Honda dealership is a factory warranty.
The dealer I purchased my vehicle offered to waive the deductibles and give you $2000 bonus if you did all your service with them and purchased the factory warranty.
I later found out that the dealership owner also owned the insurance company offering the plan and the plan pays for some kind of reconditioning of the vehicle when it's being sold/traded.
Additionally some people haggle about the price of the car yet when they go in to sign the paper work and the finance manager offers up all the add-ons people just sign away. The price of the warranty, GAP, and everything else they are selling is negotiable as well.

why are you so worried about the navigation system? a buddy of mine has an 02 tl with a navi, car has about 150k, and the system works perfectly fine. there's probably a lot of stuff on the car not designed by honda; for example, on my integra the starter and alternator are both made by denso. it sounds like you're making the navigation system into a bigger deal than it should be.

They are advised against because they don't cover everything, have plenty of loop holes for them to get out of paying and considering the average consumer keeps their vehicle for 41 months and extended warrnty are pointless.

right....those that do keep their cars longer may benifit from it.
like i said $700 is really nothing for some peice of mind. IMO at least.

I did the 7/100k. Im not sure what the "list" price is, but I paid $1000 for it. Figured it was worth the peace of mind. And there are a million sensors that if I didnt get it would break at 36,001 miles and they would probably cost 1000.
I did the extended warranty. Kinda stupid on my part since I started modifying the motor in the first 6 month I owned it. Luckily, I have not needed it either.
In my case, they said the entire amount I paid would be refunded back to me at the end of the warranty period (7 years), if I never used it. I actually have a document stating this condition. However, I am sure they will find some reason not to refund the money.

I told the girl selling the warranty:
why should i need an extended warranty? It's not supposed to break, it's a honda, Otherwise I might as well go buy a toyota...
and she answered, why don't you? in an arrogant tone... she's lucky my girlfriend was the one buying the car cause I would have been out of there ASAP.... [freak]in dealership ****** pressure selling warranties
