cam gears what do they do exactly. I heard they just move the torque curve. I had this guy tell this this weekend at an auto x event. He said it would be a waste of time to adjust them.

They do not "just" shift the TQ curve. If they are way off what the engine wants, you can improve HP and TQ on virtually the entire graph. If they are already where the engine wants them, then yes, usually you can shift the TQ curve up and down by adv/ret both cams in unison in equal increments.
