First Vtec Motor, Not Sure If It Is Engaging
So I recently put in a b18c (GSR) in my EG and I dont think my vtec is engaging. A couple of reasons I think it may not be engaging is that I dont have a RPM gauge installed yet (and therefore not sending a RPM code to the ecu??) and the engine check light is firing a knock sensor code whenever I reach 60-70 km/hr on first or second gear (not sure at what RPM because I dont have a gauge yet). Are these possible reasons why Vtec is not engaging? I'm not too sure myself as this is my first Vtec motor. The motor pulls well compared to the old d15b7 but it is not as fast as I expected. Thanks in advance

lol. obviously he doesnt know what the vtec crossover sounds like or i think he woulda figured it out. most likely, its not engaging. My buddies gsr motor throws knock sensor too, and his vtec does engage, but it doesnt pull like it should. mostly tho, his motor just was pounded to **** before he got it, but he didnt believe me when i told him so thats mostly his issue. what ecu are you running out of curiosity..

burned the solenoid...? alrighty then
is the knock sensor code the only one you have?
you could always run a wire to the vtec solenoid itself and connect it to a multimeter or something like an led just to see if its actually kicking on. Also its really a not good idea to be driving around revvin the **** out of the engine without a tach. if your trying to engage vtec, you should probably know where the redline is.

yea you need a tach for sure. but if you dont here it kick in at higher rpm's then it is not working. the tone of the motor/exhaust will change, and you will feel it pull harder without a doubt. make sure your testing it once your motor is fully warmed up also. it wont kick in unless your motor is warm. also, make sure everything is hooked up right and that you are running the correct ecu.
If your oil is low it also won't kick in. Plus your question about the gauge cluster, it has nothing to do with vtec engaging. The gauge cluster simply shows you the engine's operating levels.

you need 5 things for Vtec to engage:
1: motor needs to be fully warmed up
2: correct oil pressure
3: correct speed (i believe above 10-15mph)
4: NO cel's
5:correct RPM, which even though you dont have a tach, it will still engage.

My d15b Engaged with CEL's????

My d15b Engaged with CEL's????
yes, the only code that is firing is the knock sensor code, engine light only comes on when reved "high", I don't think it is a faulty sensor because it seems like it is doing its job as check light only comes on at a certain point, thanks for the ideas! i appreciate it a lot!
dude, get your cel's shut off first off, secondly, make sure you have your vtec wired correctly, if its already done, check your ecu, then check to make sure there's oil in the enigine, pm me if you need to ask anything.

This stops rice boys from hearing VTEC crossover in neutral. Can you imagine how [freak]ing annoying that would be all the time!?
