CV Joint, Ball Joint or Wheel Bearing?
Hi Every1,
Recently I had my car inspected for free at the honda dealership. I have a 1998 honda accord 2dr coupe v6.
The diagnosis came back with busted left front lower ball joint, and other problems which are not related to this. Anyways they told me the repairs would cost $400 to replace both of them as a pair on both sides. I refused because I have a friend who could do this almost free of charge. I drove the car all the way back to Canada (800km/500miles).
Took the car to my friend, he inspected it and test drove it and told me there is nothing wrong with the ball joints

He told me ball joints would cause serious steering issues, and noises while turning... and I guess he is right because I don't have any steering issues or any noises coming when turning on corners.
The noise comes when going on highway speeds, loud whining motor like noise. He told me my wheel bearing is probably busted, because my right one had been recently replaced so my left one might be broken or worn out too now.
I am confused as hell here... honda dealership giving me wrong diagnosis without explanation .
Here are the symptoms:
Driving above a certain speed, loud noise comes from what appears to be front left wheel. Such as loud machine running... sometimes I hear clicking when accelerating from 0 speed, only straight not turned or anything of that sort.
Could the wheel bearing also be causing the clicking noise when accelerating from 0 speed?
What else could be wrong? I am going to have my friend do a full suspension inspection and replace busted parts, but I need to be sure and want some expert advice on what I or he should be looking for?
Ok start driving the car, get to about 50 or when noise is pretty loud, then turn left then right as your driving down the road, does the noise get louder or softer depending on which way you turn. wheel bearings are more of a roaring noise than a whine. Clicking noise could be axle, most of the time they dont make noise until the boot is busted and most of the grease has come out. Really need to hear the noise for better diagnosis.
I am pretty sure the noise is coming from the front left, and honda dealership also diagnosed that side with a bad ball joint. I believe my friend that he is right, but I don't know if a bad wheel bearing would be making a clicking sound when accelerating from 0 straight...
I do not hear anything when making turns... no clicks or squeaks or whatever.
He told me that hes gonna do a full inspection after putting the car on the lift next week, but after the test drive and listening to the noise he was 100% sure it is the wheel bearing because he had replaced my right one in the past, I just forgot if it had the exact same symptoms.

i have to agree with muffin man. Willing to bet that wheel bearing is bad the bad thing is that it has to be pressed out at a shop. I personally do it myself but its a pain in the butt. you can buy part take off spindle assembly and take it to machine shop to be pressed. Sometimes you can check your wheel bearing by lifting tires off ground and try to push tire on side at top or bottom to see if it wobbles. But sometimes bearings arent that worn for it to wobble. Good luck

Going to have wheel bearing replaced this week, any idea if wheel bearing could cause clicking sounds coming from the front wheel as well?? Or the clicking sound could be something else?
Hi,
Just wondering what it turned out to be? My sister recently got back from London and I organised her to buy a friends honda accord real cheap. The car had ran without an issue for years but it seams as soon as we brought it all the problems have started to happen. I'm just wanting some help to diagnose what could be a CV / wheel bearing problem before I buy the parts to fix it.
I have replaced cv joints and axles before no problem but I have a suspicion that the noise and problem with my sisters car is more likely the the passengers side front wheel bearing.
My experience with bad cv joints tells me that that when they go the clicking noise is quite consistent and usually happens on corners increasingly as they wear worse and worse but the problem I have comes and goes.
It first happened on the highway last week when a clicking from the front left started and got really loud with allot of steering pull to the left each time it clicked (click, click, click and at the same time it pull left, pull left pull left with heaps of steering vibration). I pulled over because it was pulling so hard, checked the wheels weren't falling off and then continued my trip to work it continued to click with the steering pull until i turned off at an exit and came to a stop sign, when I accelerated from the stop sign the car was perfect again. It repeated the same thing on the way home. The car left work perfect, then it started the clicking and steering pull at around 80 kmh I kept cruising home and and then it came good again before I got home. I'm a little confused what it might be but all I can say is when the clicking and steering pull starts it starts small then almost pulls the car off the road at the same time the clicking gets louder.
To me this doesn't sound like a cv so I'm wondering it it's a wheel bearing.
Thanks!

In my experiences bad cv joints get loud when making turns on the side that is bad or worn. They tend to make noise when going over bumps and pot holes. Try pulling on the axle to see if there is play. As for the lower ball joint, you'll need to get the front end in the air and rock the wheel back and forward positions. You should also visually inspect for tears and rips. A few years ago my lower ball joint snapped clean through the knuckle during weight shifting from side to side. They are unpredictable imo.
I have a semi-loud machine (whirring) noise from left front. Gets louder the faster I go. I replaced the wheel bearing and half shaft to no avail. I'm thinking it's the differential bearing
Did it turn out to be the differential bearing? I have the same noise and was about to change the bearings and cv joints/axels until I saw your post. 91 civic 5 speed 168k miles
