Default Tire replacement...

I have 21k on my stock tires and their starting to go bald. I was told today at the tire store that they cost $180 each. Are their alternative tires that are of good quality but are cheaper. I am willing to spend the money if their are no alternatives but it seems like a lot of money. I also do not want a cheap tire. Any advice?

You can save some money and go with Potenza SO-3's, or lots of money and go with Falken Azenis.

Edit: Lots of post about tires have been made, I would look through some tire threads and see what people have to say about each tire.

Try the new Kumho MX. Price seems really attractive.

Just wondering if anybody has any opinions on the advantages/disadvantages of S03s vs 010s? Obviously the S03 will have superior wet grip/traction and better wear, but what about other factors such as repsonse, dry grip, stability, stiffness etc?? Thanks

The only disadvantage of the S-03 I can think of is the weight. It hurts the acceleration.

Weight is a function of the stiff sidewall the bridgestones have. I'll take 2 more pounds of tire for less sidewall flew. Azenis are heavy too.

The S-02, RE-010, RE-030, RE-040, RE-011, RE-711 and RE-01 all have stiff sidewalls, but are much lighter than the S-03!!!
Next time, I will search for the S-02PP if there is some left....

RE010 might be 2 pounds lighter. RE730 is same weight maybe a little more and we don't get many of the others here so hard to use those as examples.

I noticed the 21,000 too. Mine were gone at 14k.

edit: we do get the S02 . . .

I think the RE010 rocks in the dry and for handling response. And they're actually quite good in the wet, too, as long as they're not worn down close to the tread indicator bars.

They're both good tires though.

I have 12K miles on my RE010 (including one track event) and they've still got plenty of tread.

21,000? Amazing. I got about 11,500. Anyhoo, is there any rhyme or reason to the naming schemes that all those Potenza's have?? There's way too many to keep track of......

I got nearly 30K miles on my RE010s which included a couple driving schools, a high speed autocross at a Blackhawk Farms Raceway, a few autocrosses, and lots of daily driving. I may have gotten an unusual set but I rotated them every 1500-3000 miles or so (basically any time I went to the track or autocross!). I also made sure the pressures were always good.

And, when I replaced them at 28k miles, they still werent at the wear bars, but probably damn close.

i got my S0-3s installed 2 days ago and they feel great. Albeit a touch heavier, the traction in cornering is very very good. Got 'em for $76 on Tirerack.

check their website: tirerack.com. I think they should still be the same price if I'm not mistaken. The 195-50s are the cheapest ones. When ordering though don't specify a car. They give hassles to some people b/c Integras may exceed the weight limit for 195-50s. I haven't found any problems with them though I've only had them on for several days.

I've made it to 20k miles on mine, even after driving out to the Expo,2 days of fun, and the drive back to NY they still have some life left, well at least 2 of them.

I got the Azenis ready to go on as soon as I get it back from Acura.

BTW $278 from http://www.vulcantire.com for the Azenis

Vulcan charges rather hefty shipping, though, so keep that in mind when ordering. I just got Azenis tires and did considerably better by buying from Discount Tire Direct, who includes shipping now (but tires were a couple bucks more than Vulcan).

But, even with free shipping, I received the tires 2 days after I ordered. Just need to get them mounted up....

You must have gotten 195/50-15 and gotten them at least a month ago. The past few weeks that size has still been on sale but in the $86-88 range.

I don't think I'd use that size. It's 3.3 percent smaller in outer diameter than the stock 195/55-15, so your speedometer and odometer will read 3.4 percent high. That's a significant difference.

what's your application?
if you take your car autoXing and road course driving, buy some SO-3's, RE010, or Azenies.
if you don't do that, kumho ecsta 712's are cheap, decent grip(squeels like a pig around a road course), and have decent tread life. a lot better than those other three.

I used that size with Yokohama AVS-intermediates with no problems. Figuring those tires will last 15K miles, your mileage will read up to 500 or so miles high, which may or may not concern you that much (500 miles at a $0.15/mile adjustment comes out to $75).

Since the OD is 3.x% smaller than stock, your acceleration will improve in each gear due to the further shortening of your effective gearing.
