GSR block girdle in LS block.. what all do i need..
ok, i've seen a few LS motors built with the GSR block girdle.
i have an extra block i'm building with pr3 pistons, LS rods and crank.. everything is balanced and blueprinted. i was thinking that a gsr block girdle would be a nice addition to this block.. i've got a built LS head right now and wanna take advantage of my performance cams.. i just want it to be more reliable.
anyway, what all would i need to use the gsr block girdle in my LS block?
i work in a machine shop so i can modify whatever i need to make it work.. but i'm not sure if i need the gsr oil pan and other stuff..
i'm also thinking about the LS/VTEC after i get bored of my built LS head.
thanks

Here is what you need:
GS-R/ITR oil pan
GS-R/ITR oil pickup
GS-R/ITR windage tray
GS-R/ITR main cap girdle
Here is what you need to do to make it fit:
You can either...
A. Machine the girdle to allow the #3 main cap, which is taller than the others, to accept the #3 main cap.
Or
B. Machine the #3 main cap so that it is the same height as the other 4 main caps. This is what I did. The GS-R/ITR main caps are all the same height so I thought it would be the right thing to do.
You also need to take off a little material of the girdle on the part where it meets the #2 main cap (I am pretty sure it is #2. I am going from memory). There are some pics floating around to demonstrate what I am talking about. Help a brutha out if you have the pic
That is pretty much it. Next thing to do is assemble the parts just like you would a GS-R/ITR block.
Good luck.

Also you need to add the downs in between the main caps and girdle like the gsr is so the girdle can slide around. You also need the bolts....Mike
hey thanks, so i need the GSR Main bolts as well? just for #2,#3, and #4 right?
by machining down the #3 main cap, wouldnt that weaken it? or did honda make it "bigger" because the LS motor didnt have the block girdle and that was their attempt at strengthening the LS bottom end?
if anyone has pics of this mod please post them..
thanks in advance

yeah well i'm kinda on a budget so i can get the gsr block girdle for $70 and the z10 costs about what $300? give or take some.. and i'd still have to get the oilpan, and other stuff.. i'm sure the z10 is probably stronger, but i'm not going to be boosting this motor just wanna be able to safely rev to about 8200 rpm or 8600 if i go LSVTEC with typeR cams.
You should Dowel the girdle to the main caps like ninesecrx said. The girdle won't do much but look pretty under that oil pan if you skip this part.

ahhhh.. now i understand what ninesecrx was saying.. the "downs" kinda threw me off.. the locating pins like the head has.
thats easy enough to do.
does the gsr have those locating pins already for the block girdle? or would i need to machine the girdle as well as the main caps.?

Haha...opps, I ment to say dowels
The girdle should already have them in it and you need to drill the main caps....Mike

thanks Mike,
one question.
do you guys think this is a worthwhile mod?
i mean am i just wasting time in doing this or is it really worth it?
i think it is. but i have some friends asking and so i want some others opinions.
thanks

Realistically, you will not notice the difference. But, anything you can do to make the bottom end more rigid will definitely not hurt.
If you plan on spinning your LS/VTEC or CRVTEC up to GS-R/ITR revlimits I would suggest it. It is not extremely expensive and it doesn't hurt anything.

How high would you need to be revving to make this a mod that is worth doing??
I will be running an all motor LS, but I am not going ls/vtec so would I be needing it to make my shifts between 8k-8.5k rpm's?? Realistically, with the cams that I will be running (JG 301's) I dont think that I will be shifting higher than 8k.
I am in the process of building my engine and I will be going to the machine shop to have them do their part and I wouldnt mind having everything done at once...
Later,
BR
